Force Duty
Changes Career
College Station. — A tour in
the U. S. Air Force re ulted
in a career change for luirry
Mangum, Bee County native
now radiological technician for
the new “heart station” at
Texas A&M Universlty s Col-
lege of Veterinary Medicine.
The 1964 Pettus High School
g”aduate received a bachelor’s
degree in agriculture business
from Southwest Texas State
University in 1968, returned
to Pettus as junior high scien-
ce teacher and coach for one
year before entering the Air
Force in 1969
Mangum was trained as an
X-ray technician and it open-
ed up a new career.
He joined a Bryan radio-
logist after his discharge in
1971 and last September was
employed by the Veterinary
Physiology and Pharmocology
Department at TAMU’s veter-
inary schools.

Mrs. C. M. Mangum of Cotulla
and former Beeville residents,
assists in surgery preparations
and operates the heart sta-
tion's fluorsccpe, Ampex video
recording equipment and the
Brush recorder, which moni-
tors the vital life signs.
His work is unique because
th>* TAMU heart station is the
first of its kind in the South-
west, and one of a small num-
ber in the nation.
Fully operational since Jan-
uary, the station does clinical
, studies on cardiovascular re-
ferrals from across the state.
■ Mangum said the station aver-
■ ages four cases a week, mostly
■ dogs and cats with heart-re-
lated problems.
Each diagnostic procedure
akes several hours. The heart
tatio nstaff includes seven

registered nurse.
