BUT THE
TRUTH
They're not only strong words, but ones that Sheriff Fontenot really believes in.
They mean credibility to the County Sheriff's office. Huel Fontenot has put the truth first to bring
reputable and trustworthy law enforcement back to our County. And... the simple truth is from 1989 to
1992, the Sheriff's office has:

Hatton Happenings
As the end of school nears, Chap-
ter I students continue to work
hard. Many students participated
in the 600 Minute Reading Club
and will be receiving free
Astroworld tickets. There were 187
students from Hatton who reached
their 600 minute goal. Mrs. Smith
and Mrs. Benoit are especially
proud of their students who
reached this goal. This was great
since it was Hatton’s first time to
participate in the program. Keep
up the good work- and keep read-
ing!
The students in Mrs. Chandler’s
kindergarten class went "buggy”
during an interesting insect unit.
Fun projects such as making butter
bees, flutter flies, and fancy ants
kept students busy. Students were
surprised to learn that spiders are
not insects. They are now busy
taking achievement tests and work-
ing on Easter projects. Many stu-
dents are turning into great story
writers.
Mrs. McClain’s first grade class
had a winner in the EnviroFair
poster contest. The class is enjoying
reading bunny stories and writing
Easter stories.
Students in second grade enjoyed
participating in the bus safety
poster contest which reflected the
!?cmc <~ross *“ ww- the thing to
do. Mrs. Bradford’s class has been
studying weather and keeping a
duily record of temperatures and
cloud formations.
Springtime proves to be a time for
learning much about plants,
animals, and insects in Mrs.
Gremilhon’s third grade class Fun
displays on these topics are being
observed. Students are proud of
their hard work in preparing for
achievement tests. Congratulations
to all on super Envirofair projects!
Mr. Russell’s science classes have
started a unit on oceanography.
The took a trip under the ocean’s
surface and came face to face with
some interesting sea creatures
when they watched a video about
sea life. His math class is learning
about geometric shapes and how
those shapes effect the things they
use everyday.
In Mrs. Stout’s room students are
reviewing skills in preparation for
the achievement tests. Vocabulary
and inference skills, library
reference skills, and maps, tables,
and graphs, are some of ones being
stressed. Students are excitedly
waiting for the D.A.R.E. gradua-
tion on April 14th.

Card of Thanks
As a concerned parent and a
grandparent, we want to take this
opportunity to say thank-you to Lil-
lie Myers and Sims Elementary
school for their reading incentive
program, "The 600 Minute Club".
This program, for elementary age
students, is designed to encourage
reading, whether they read or
someone takes the time to read to
them.
help enable us to achieve and
create a brighter future for oursel-
ves and others. If an individual can
read there, is usually a book (or
many) that will tell him how, when,
where, or what information is
desired. Reading can make the dif-
ference in the outcome of ones life.
In conclusion, this reading incen-
tive program is an invaluable ser-
vice that provides our children
today an opportunity to prepare to
be the successful leaders of tomor-
It is not always easy to convince a
young child of the benefits of read-
ing without some type of tangible
reward. Therefore, to encourage
reading, a special reward or activity
is provided. This year the special
recognition was the "Fun Fest", a
two hour period of various outside
recreational activities.
Reading skills are the essence of
education. It is reading skills that
row. We hope this program and
others like it continues in the fu-
ture. Positive reinforcement of
desired behaviors is an excellent
way to encourage and recognize a
child’s achievment(s).
