Christmas stories and visits
wf'" Getting into the Christmas spirit,
the Skip Bo Club not only had its
regular games, but sang a few
t ^Christmas carols. I don't really think
the group will be asked to sing in
public, but it was fun. Those
attending were Bonnie Johanson,
Willcna McKneely. Pearlic Walters,
Madye Horak, Jennie, Boulting
house. Noble Lee Smith and Louise
Estep The party was held in the
home of Floyce Slaughter. The club
will meet next year—Tuesday, Janu-
ary 7: I486.
S.l and Noble Lee Smith started
Christmas celebrating early in Ama-
rillo with her sister. Geraldine and
Charles Cheezy Gray^ While there
Amy” (Thaxton) Cronberge and Al
Cronbergc joined them for a fun
time. There was lots of snow, but
Noble Lee said they just didn't have
time to build a snow man.
Harold Ellison and daughter.
Glenda Halley of Batesville. Arkan
sas. are spending the Christmas
holidays with Johnny Ellison. John-
ny has been on the sick list; hope he
will soon be well.
Van and Polly Maddox attended
Ricci Grimes's piano recital at the
Methodist Church in San Saba
Sunday afternoon. They also attend-
ed the San Saba Band Christmas
Concert to sec Regan Grimes play.
Ricci and Regan are Van's and
Polly's grandchildren.
Kathrinc Bond visited her sister
Josephine and her husband Craig
Robison in San Antonio Monday.
I have a couple of little Christmas
stories that mean a lot to me. 1 have a
niece w ho lives here. She and I were
discussing Christmas and decided it
is number one special for children.
She said, "When I was a little
eirl, Mack Daugherty had a grocery
store here, and one year he put a
little w reath in the window with one
little candle, and I just looked and
looked at that little candle."
So this gave me an idea. The
children needed something to signify
Christmas in Cherokee. So-o-o I
asked for volunteers to help me put
up a big poster of Santa Claus (most
were relatives who I asked); they all
refused, even mv own husband But
as luck would have it, my grandson
Mike came for a visit. Before he
could get his hat off. I told him I had
a little job and needed help, so in a
matter of 10 minutes we had Santa
on the side of the Mack Daugherty's
building on the main street of
Cherokee. So-o-o we had Santa in
Cherokee, and the children said they
liked it
The other story was one my
brother told me. As he was shopping
one Christmas when the little remote
control cars were popular, he was in
the process of buying two when there
was a tug at his sleeve. He looked;
down and there was a sad looking
little boy who said, "Are you buying
those for your grandchildren?" Mv
brother said. "Yes." The little boy
replied, “1 sure wish you were my
grandfather." Years later, my bro-
ther still worries that he didn't find
that little boy and buy him a car.
The Cherokee Home children and
staff want to say "Thank you" to
Skinny 'and Beth Estep for the
Christmas treat. They gave a dinner
for the whole crew at L.AL. in San
Saba.
A huge tree brought from the Tom
Barker place had been put in the
gym of the Cherokee Home. It was
beautifully decorated, and a moun-
tain of gifts piled around. Each child
had many gifts. The children were so
happy they had little time for the
cookies and hot punch. Gifts were
sent to the home from all over the
state. 'We give thanks for all these
good people. The children's holidays
began Friday, December 20. They
will be with family, friends and
sponsors, returning to the home
January 1, I486.
So guess it's time to wish you all a
Merry Christmas and a Happy New
Year. May God bless you and keep
you safe.
