Secretary of State
Warns Of Possible
Election Crime
Secretary of State George
Strake has informed Jeri
Osborne, Carson County
Republican Party Chair-
man, that any election
official who refuses to
allow any qualified voter
to vote in the primary
election of the party of
his choice "would be
quilty of a misdemeanor
and subject to criminal
prosecution".
"A qualified voter who
has signed the filing pe-
tition of a potential can-
didate of one party but
who has not voted in the
.1980 primary election of
that party must be nermttt-
ed to vote in the primary
elect on of any other party, "
Strake said.
All persons qualified to
vote in general elections
are entitled to partrcrp-ate
in party primary elections, "
Strake quoted. "Current
law clearly does not pro-
hibit a person who signs any
petition from voting in the
primary of another party,
nor does it provide for any
criminal penalties if a per-
son does so, "
Strake went on to say that
any election official who
tried in any way to coerce
a qualified voter not to
vote in the primary of his
choice "would risk com-
mitting a federal crime. "
The statements came in
an official memorandum
from the Secretary of State
to all County Chairmen _
and County Clerks in the
state. Mrs. Osborne noted
that Strake had learned that
many people in the state
were unsure of the eligibili-
ty of qualified voters who
signed petitions for either
candidates for public office
or petitions for Republican
candidates for President to
vote ;in the primary elect-
ion of their choice.
Chairman Osborne urged
all qualified /oters to par-
tici Tate in the May 3 pri-
mary election. We are
oroud of our candidates and
of our binding presidential
primary. We invite every-
one to come vote with us—
regardless of what party
they have chosen in the
past. "

•The home gardening sea-
son is in full sway across the
nation again this month.
After long months of
winter, followed by spring
rains, millions of American
householders are back at the
annual battle with crab grass
and insects in the peren-
nial effort to add a touch of
natural color and beauty.
The American Medical
Association recommends
gardening as good therapy
require medical attention.
Power tools, particularly
lawn mowers, are standard
equipment for the modern
home gardener. They save
many an aching back. But
they are potentially danger-
ous. Your power mower
comes with instructions on
its safe use. Study them care-
fully. If you’re in doubt,
check with a. dealer or a
mechanic on the hazards of
power tools.
Insect sprays and powders,
plus poisons that kill weeds,
are useful adjuncts to garden-
ing. These, also, have inher-
ent hazards if improperly or
carelessly used. Once again,
most of us, a sting is painful
and causes swelling, but
isn’t really serious. If you are
one of those individuals with
an allergy to insect bites, ask
your doctor about the desen-
sitizing injections.
and good exercise for al-
most everyone. Gardening
also entails some risks to
health and safety, most of
which can be avoided.
Take it easy for the first
few weekends. Give your
winter-softened muscles a
chance to regain strength
gradually.
Gardening often brings
cuts and scratches from
twigs, thorns, and sharp
tools. First aid usually con-
sists of washing with soap
and water and applying an
adhesive bandage. Let it
bleed a little to wash away
impurities. Deeper cuts may
