ed Tuesday morning by the
runaway of the horseless deliv-
ery-wagon of the Miller Mercan
tile Co. However there was no
/ / serious damage done but W. M.
Forbus’ wagon was struck and
upset and he was thrown under
the heels of his horses and mi
raculously escaped being k eked
to death.
A. C. Einbeck, son in *aw of
our fellow citizen John McFar
lane, of West End, came in this
week to spend a few days. Mr
Einbeck is a prominent druggist
of West New York
A. F. Adams our genial friend
of the Winters country had busi-
ness with us the first of the
week.

on last Tuesday night to see a
crowd of “13” merry maids
who hid assembled at the home
of Mrs. Plummer start out to
find the “timid” bashful boys
they were to escort to the Leap
Year party at the home of Mr.
and M rs Wilmoth.
Well, they found them all
“huddled together” in the beau-
tiful parlors of Mrs. Lee Mad-
dox and tinal y coaxed them off
to the place where a trip to the
different places of interest in
the United Slates and Mexico
was to be made.
W. R. Vier, the livery and
feed man of Miles, had business
in Ballinger Tuesday.
Arch Holman came* in from
San Angelo Thursday and spent
the day with Ballinger friends
and returned home Friday.
Miss Verna Moser came in
in from Brady Friday where she
has been visiting Miss Mamie
Melton for the pist few weeks.
Mr. J. C. Bell and family de
sire to thank the good people of
Ballinger for their kindness and
help during the late sickness of
himself and family.

Mrs. J. D Hardgrave and her
son Earl left here the first of
this ween for an extended visit
to her daughter Mrs. J. D.
Smith who lives near Roby.
We are glad to see the pros-
perity of the Home Steam laun-
dry as evidenced by the beauti-
ful and comfortable new delivery
wairon in which Mr. Forbes now
calls on their many patrons.
Judge Guion will begin the
erection of a two story rock
building on his lot next door to
D. Reeder’s in about ten days,
which will add materially to the
looks of that side of 8th Street.

Wilmeth, acting as station agent
for the Santa Fe issued tickets
t<> all present, a couple going on
an imaginative trip io each city
and point selected, Chicago. New
York, St. Louis, Washington, etc.

Rather, filled “all aboard” and
the couples entered the taste-
fully and beautifully arranged
dininy room which served as a
chair car All were
supplied with tablets and pencil
and Mrs. Wilmeth announced
that prizes would be awarded to
the best and second best de
scriptions of the trip the merry
travelers were about to take.
Thirty minutes were allowed in
which to finish the description,
during which time the contest-
ants were “bothered’’ by Miss
Lola Brown as “butcher” dis-
tributing candies, etc., and by
the two train porters, Messrs.
Clyde Cockrell and Everett
Hardgrave, with their feather
dusters and an extremely solici-
tous desire to be as nice and
polite as any “nigger ”
The trips were quickly made,
some nowaver tailing to get back
home on time San Antonio.
Miss Katie Belle Gregory, was
awarded 1st prize, a beautiful
purse, her escort Mr. Tom Pat-
tersod oeing given a nice toilet
case, rhe second prize was
awarded to Rev. Burton who
visited Washington City with
Miss Estelle Underwood, the
prize being a serviceable bill
book, while Miss Underwood was
given a lovely purse
The prizes being presented,
the butcher. Miss Brown, de-
lighted the pleasureseekers
with a reading, well rendered,
entitled “Mrs Ruggles Dinner
Party.” i'ne porter, Mr. Cock-
roll, then sang some songs, Prof
Stovall sang “Put me off at
Buffalo ’ and several beaut ful
selections were rendered by
Misses Truly, Underwood and
Hoffer
Nice refreshments were served
in the usua traveler’s lunch box
and after a most enjoyable even
ing indeed the guests bade their
charming hostess good night, to
carry with them the memory of
a pleasantly spent evening and a
wish that others like it nri.y
come again. The future will
tell whether or not any of the
“old maids” popped the question.
