A Note From The Chief
By Police Chief Ronnie Leek
Yoakum Police Department
Well, the 73rd Tom Tom 1 eat her Festival is history The first one 1
worked as a local police officer was the 46th. Tom Tom Festival back in
1974. Looks like we had a lot of folks at the festival and everyone was
enjoying a good time Hats off to all who worked to make it a big success
again this year I want to thank some people w ho helped me and the Po-
lice Department during the Festival First, thanks to the cooks at Hochheim
Prairie Insurance for preparing the brisket and sausage for our law en-
forcement meal after the Grand Parade They have been doing this for us
many years and always do a great job Also, thanks to Eddy Packing for
again donating the sausage for our meal 1 want to thank everyone who
helped me with the Kiddie and Grand Parade and those who helped pre-
pare and serve the law enforcement meal Finally, thanks to Chief Mark
Zimmerman of Moulton for use of his golf cart w hich the officers used
for patrol in the City Park
On behalf of the Police Department, I want to express thanks and
appreciation to Beta Sigma Phi for their generous donation towards our
training center I think they become the 105th donor to the Center.
1 want to mention something that 1 think is really a fine and kind
gesture Robert Werner, owner of Werner's Restaurant in Shiner, really
does something nice for his employees I saw recently where he gave
tour of his employees $500 scholarships upon their graduation from high
school. Some time back when Mary and 1 were in the restaurant and vis-
iting with Robert, he mentioned this and said he tries to do this every year
for those employees who have really worked hard for him and also did
well in school.
Speaking of something fine and kind, how about the dedicated mem-
bers of the Yoakum Community Hospital Auxiliary or "Pink l adies" as
they are known? Hospitals can sometimes be places of despair and sad-
ness but one "bright spot" always there is the volunteers and their kind
words and deeds.
In performing public safety services, your local police department
has to communicate very frequently w ith the lexas Department of Public
Safety headquarters in Austin. I his is done via a teletype system which
has been connected by phone lines. All of that changed recently-when the
teletype system received a new satellite dish which was mounted on the
roof of the Yoakum Municipal Building: All of the communications be-
tween us and the lexas DPS will now be handled by the Telestar V. a
satellite 22.300 miles above the earth' In very heavy foggy conditions, a
backup phone line connection is still linking us to Austin.
Well. 1 better shove off for another w eek I njoyed w riting this up for
you. hope you enjoyed it 1'11 leave you with this from Oliver Wendell
Holmes: "Man's mind, once stretched by a new idea, never regains its
(original dimensions." lake care of yourself
REMEMBER
FATHER’S DAY IS JUNE 17TH
We, the employees of the Operations Department of DeWitt
Electric Co-op, are asking members of DeWitt Electic Co-op to vote
in favor of the proposed consolidation of Guadalupe Valley Electic
Co-op and DeWitt Electric Co-op.
We believe it is in the best interesbof the DeWitt Co-op member-
ship as well as the best interest of the employees to consolidate. As
members, you will continue to see the same employees in the office
and the field. As employees, it will be a big comfort to know that we
won't have to move to another town to have a job, our kids can still
go to the same schools they go to now and our way of life will go on
just as it is.
You, as a member, have a choice as to what the Co-op is going to
do. The ballots will be mailed to you on June 11. We will greatly
appreciate you voting for the proposal to consolidate and ask that
you mail your ballot back as soon as possible.
Thank you,
Employees
Operations Dept.
DeWitt Electric Co-op
submitted by Joel Jackson
I've received my electric service from DeWitt Electric Coopera-
tive for over 30 years. DeWitt has proven to be a very good electric
provider. Although, I would hate to see DeWitt Electric go away, I
believe consolidating with GVEC will be a good thing.
In a time when everything is changing, I think we'd be fortunate
to remain with a cooperative that has the same values we've had for
over 60 years. If we sit back and wait, it's likely that we might be
taken over by some energy company where we would lose all the
personal contact that we so enjoy now. I encourage each DeWitt
member to take part in your cooperative and vote in favor of the
consolidation with GVEC when you receive your main ballot in a
few days. This may be our last opportunity to remain a part of a
cooperative.
Sincerely,
J. Nyles Steinmann

Shown above are, from left, Harvey Schneider and Otto Borchers.
Club President Bill Lopez recognized two visiting Rotarians from Cuero:
Janie Veth and J. Gossett; Jeanne Chancy, guest of Bob Putnam, and Gil
Chisholm, guest of Bill Lopez. New Rotarian Dale Farnsworth was in-
ducted into the Club by Secretary Jim Stahl.
Program Chairman Charles Kvinta announced the Club's selection for
Citizen of the Month, Harvey P. Schneider. Schneider graduated from
Yoakum High School in 1956, received a Bachelor of Education degree in
1960 from SWT and also a Master of Education degree in 1965.
After serving the Yoakum Independent School District as a coach, teacher,
principal, and assistant superintendent for over 20 years, he was named
superintendent in 1985. He retired last month.
Schneider and his wife Sue Ann have been married 40 years and have a
daughter. Dr. Lisa Schneider; a son, Kevin P. Schneider; and two grandchil-
dren, Ashton K. Schneider and Kaylee Schneider.
Kvinta listed Schneider's many civic efforts: Bluebonnet Youth Ranch
director, Yoakum Chamber of Commerce director, member and officer of
the Yoakum Lions Club for 36 years, member of the original Economic
Development Committee, Little League coach, and many others.
As a lifetime member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, he has served as a
councilman, Sunday school teacher, and youth league sponsor.
After a standing ovation from the Club, Schneider expressed his appre-
ciation for the award and thanked the Rotary Club for its help in many ways
during his career.
The meeting adjourned with the Rotary Four Way Test.
For over 60 years, DeWitt Electric Cooperative has served the
electrical needs of its members. This, I know, has not been an easy
task - trying to keep the lights on and maintain reasonable rates.
With deregulation around the comer, the DeWitt Board is faced
with a difficult decision - what to do next? There is no doubt, electric
accounts will be lost and DeWitt could possibly even be forced to
raise its rates. The Board of Directors has been faced with a decision
that will change DeWitt Electric forever. The members of DeWitt
will have an opportunity to vote on the consolidation of DeWitt and
GVEC.
Although a larger cooperative, I believe GVEC to have the same
values as DeWitt - to serve the members at the lowest cost possible
and provide the best service possible. The Boards of both coopera-
tives have reviewed all the issues and, I believe, have found it to be
in the best interest of DeWitt Electric and GVEC to consolidate. 1
concur with DeWitt's Board of Directors' decision and encourage all
the members of DeWitt to participate by voting for the consolidation
beginning on June 11.
Sincerely,
Allan Stevens
