Arizona prison hostage
says she’s OK
BUCKEYE, Ariz. — As a prison
standoff began its second week
Sunday, negotiators were getting
“increasingly more compliant
responses” from two inmates
holding a correctional officer
hostage in a prison watch tower,
a prison official said.
The change in the inmates is
“a sign that negotiations have
been effective," said the Arizona
Department of Corrections offi-
cial, Ivan Bartos. He did not elab-
orate about the change.
Officials have provided little
information about the standoff
since it began, refusing to dis-
cuss how the inmates got into
the tower.

Dean said the Iraqi standard

refused to dissociate himself

And Sen. Joe Lieberman
accused Dean of an “irresponsi-

lawmakers like himself to the
deaths of more than 500 U.S.
soldiers in Iraq.
While not always reliable in
New Hampshire, polls suggest
Kerry led by 12 to 25 points,
with Dean finally stopping his
post-Iowa freefall. Edwards and
Clark are within striking dis-
tance of Dean. Lieberman trails,
but has gained some ground.
