PASADENA — One of the
top football minds — either
Mack Brown or Al Gore, we

Rangers roasted South Houston,
! 32-7, in the season opener for
both teams, and the difference
was far greater than the final
25-point margin.
This was one big, happy com-
ing out party for not only
Sterling, but for Herb Minyard
as well. Minyard paced the side-
lines and called the shots in his
first game as a head coach. Ross
fans are hoping he set some-
thing of a precedent.

The Barbers Hill volleyball team beat I
Sweeney (25-18 and 25-16) to win die
Santa Fe tournament Saturday.
“We’re playing at midseason form,”
said John Leonard, Eagles coach. “I’m
really excited about it. It’s neat to see ■
everything come together.”
The Eagles also defeated La Marque
Consolidated and Alief Taylor on its
way to the title. Leonard said the win
over Alief Taylor, which had been unde-
feated, was especially impressive.
“We kind of made it look easy,” he
said. “If you can make volleyball look
easy, then you’re doing a pretty good
job.”
Many of the Eagles were honored for
their outstanding play during the tourna-
ment. Senior outside hitter Meagan
Monk, junior outside hitter Jacki Sparks
and junior middle blocker Aly
Hazelwood were named to the all-tour-
nament team.
Senior setter Abby Farmer was named
the tournament’s most valuable player.
“Abby made a lot of good decisions
and a lot of good plays,” Leonard said.
“She pretty much quarterbacked us.”
The Eagles, now 17-1 on the season,
travel to Crosby Tuesday to take on the
Cougars. The match is scheduled to
begin at 6 p.m.

AUSTIN— Cedric Benson

65-0 Saturday night.
Benson, who ranks third in
career yards at Texas behind
Heisman Trophy winners Ricky
Williams and Earl Campbell,
had 141 yards as Texas cruised
to a 44-0 halftime lead.

worth sticking around for was to
