Someone’s out to get me.
1 don’t want to sound paranoid,
but it’s true. Just ask my insurance
agent. Someone’s out to get me,
and they’re doing a good job.
Two weeks ago, for the third
time in 14 months, I was involved
in a traffic accident that wasn’t my
fault. All three have happened at
Baytown intersections.
When we moved here four years
ago, 1 knew I would have to con-
quer my fear of driving in Houston.
Which I did. For me, driving in
Houston is a no-brainer. Right now
I’d rather take a spin around Loop
610 than drive my child down
Decker Drive to die library. In fact,
I’ve been staying home a lot lately.
Am I overreacting? You tell me.
Let’s take a look at my Baytown
traffic accident resume:
March 2003: Rear-ended at
Garth and Cedar Bayou-
Lynchburg. No damage. The guy
who hit me was messing with his
radio and forgot to look up.
July 2003: Rear-ended at Decker
Drive and Highway 146. Car
totaled. The other guy was high on
drugs and uninsured.
May 2004: My car and another
car were hit at West Main and Lee
Drive by someone running a red
light. Car totaled.
After this last wreck, I wanted to
ask the light-runner, “How did you
find me? Did someone tell you to
track me down and hit my car?” in
an effort to get to the bottom of
this. But I didn’t get the chance.
The driver apparently didn’t have
time to deal with a wreck at the
moment because he or she drove
off rather quickly.
So is it just me? Does this hap-
pen to anyone else? Since becom-
ing a licensed driver 16 years ago,
I’ve lived and driven in four differ-
ent towns and never had this prob-
lem. Drawing a conclusion from
my experiences, a relative of mine
in another town remarked,
“Baytown must be full of idiots
who have no respect for anyone on
the road!”
Now, I know that’s not true. I-
know scads of respectful, non-
idiots around here.
But you have to understand this
relative’s frustration at not only the
number of wrecks in which I’ve
been involved, but the fact that this
last one occurred while I’m six
months into a high-risk pregnancy.
If there were ever a time that I did-
n’t need to be hit by a two-ton
piece of gasoline-powered steel, it’s
now.
I’ve decided my problem is this:
I’ve been obeying the law and,
therefore, foolishly getting in the
way of people who don’t have time
for me to stop at red lights or go
through green lights. Maybe I
should start running red lights and
sitting through green lights. I figure
paying for a bunch of tickets would
be easier than totaling two cars per
year.
As for the person who is out to
get me, isn’t there some other way
we can work this out? Are you
angry over something I’ve written?
Couldn’t you just send me some
hate mail? I’ve only received one
hate letter since I started writing for
The Baytown Sun, and I’ve been
feeling deprived.
Besides, it would be easier on
my health, pocketbook and the
safety of my 5-year-old daughter,
who has been in the car with me
for all three wrecks.
Maybe someone should stop me.
Before 1 obey the law again.
