Texas live-

certified brucellosis
free herds. Dr John
W Holcombe, exec
ut i vc director, Tex

Commission. re
pot t$
By the end of,
this month, it is ex
pected there will be
more than 450certi
tied brucellosis free
herds in Texas By
the end of the year,
the figure could
jump to more than
800 "As of the end of
July, 1981, there
were only 150 certi-
fied free herds in,
Texas." Dr. Hol-
combe said
'The reasons
for this are many; a
cattleman’s best as-
surance for as much
free movement of
his cattle as possible
within Texas or out-
of-state is a certified
brucellosis free
herd," Dr. Hol-
combe explained.
The Texas Ani-
mal Health Com-
mission had planned
to publish a direc-
tory of certified free
herds “We aregeft-
ing so many addi-
tions every week
and month that a
directory would be
out of date. Howev-
er, we will be happy
to supply any one
with the names of
certified free herds
by contacting this
office or any of the
15 area TAHC offi-
ces in the state," Dr.
Holcombe Mid.
Currently,
there M differ-
ent breeds in Texas
with certified free
herds. These include
Brangus. Angus,
Maine Anjou. Hol-
stein, Beefmaster.
Brahman, Charo
lais, Santa Gertru-
dis, Red Angus,
Polled Hereford,
Herefprd, Pinzgau-
er, Simmental. Jer-
sey. Limousin. Red
Brangus. Red Brah-
man.*' Longhorn.
Beefalo, Polled
Brahman. Brown
Swiss, Guernsey
Aberdeen Angus
Tarentaise, Bra
ford. Chianina.
A certified bru-
cellosis free herd is
available for beef
cattle producers,
both registered and
commercial as well
as dairymen.
"The interest
in establishing a
certified free herd is
statewide, and we
are finding corhmer-
cial as well as pure-
bred breeders are
getting their herds
certified brucellosis
free,’*’ Dr. Holcombe
said.
Complete de-
tails on getting a
herd certified may
be obtained from
any area TAHC of-
fice, county Exten-
sion agents, or from
veterinarians.
