Very little overwhelmed Lyons this
season as she helped lead the Eagles
to a 33-6 record and a District 21-4A
co-championship. As a three-year
member of the varsity, she finished
her career with 433 digs and 563
kills.
“To me, Chelsea is the perfect
high school player,” Barbers Hill
head coach John Leonard said. “She
has all-around skill and she will
make a good college volleyball play-
er because she is so well-rounded.
“She is very coachable and does
whatever you ask without question.
Chelsea’s a good egg.”

Tyler after attending a tryout on the
campus. It was one of several she

Sterling and Lee began Friday
night’s boys’ soccer match at
Stallworth Stadium tied in the
District 21-5A standings.
That’s the way they ended it,
too, after Lee’s Ulises Irias scored
on a beauty of a 25-yard direct
free kick with five minutes
remaining to knot the game at 2-
2.
“We were tied coming in and
we’re still tied,” Lee coach Criss
Dippel said. “I’d like to see
Sterling and us win out.
“It would be great if we could
get two Baytown team in the play-
offs, and if both teams continue
like they did tonight, that could
happen.”
Both coaches marveled at what
their players created on the artifi-
cial turf.
“If you paid admission to get
into the game, you got your
money’s worth,” Sterling coach
Jim Richter said. “It was one of
the better high school games I’ve
seen in a long time.”
The game was scoreless
through a first half that saw

with crisp passing and constant
pressure on the Lee defense and
keeper Jose Cornejo.
Lee dominated the latter stages
of the first half, but could not get
a shot past Sterling’s Adrian
Gonzales.
Lee’s Luis Camacho finally got
the night’s first goal on a 20-yard
direct free kick three minutes into
* the second half.
Both of the Ganders’ goals
came after fouls were called on
Sterling defenders on their end of
the field.
The night’s prettiest goal was
Sterling’s equalizer, coming 10
minutes into the second half.

have had a field day with this one.

THE BAYTOWN SUN
The Lady Rangers are on a roll.
The Sterling softball team picked up
two more wins Friday, the second day
of competition in the North Shore
Tournament.
In their first game of the day, the
Lady Rangers defeated Sam Rayburn
3-1 in a game that went to the interna-
tional tiebreaker. They followed up
with an 11-0 blowout of Galena Park.
Lee’s Lady Ganders also had their
share of excitement, scoring three runs
in the bottom of the fifth to defeat
Caney Creek 4-3. In its second game
of the day, Lee came close to overcom-
ing a 7-0 deficit with six runs in the
final inning of a 7-6 loss to Sam
Raybum.
In the international tiebreaker, each
team starts the inning with a runner on
second. After the first six innings of
Sterling’s game against Sam Raybum,
that was the only way a team was
going to score after both teams played
six scoreless innings.
Kenna Terry got the start for Sterling
and threw six innings before giving
way to Tara Bell who picked up the
win. i
The Lady Rangers put a run on the
board in the seventh when Crisse Coile
scored on a squeeze bunt laid down by
Taylor Zink. Sam Raybum answered in
the top of the seventh only to see
Sterling score two more runs the next
inning.
Adrienne Oviedo hit a single with 5
two outs in the inning to score Mary
Tyler Dobson and Pepper Ruiz. Bell
secured the win in the bottom of the
eighth by striking out the side.
In its second game of the day,
Sterling steamrolled by Galena Park to
improve to 8-5 on the year. Bell picked
up the win in the circle, giving up two
hits and striking out eight. At the plate,
the junior went 2 for 3 with a double
and a three-run homer. Courtney Zink,

MONT BELVIEU—To call .
Barbers Hill senior Chelsea Lyons a
nervous wreck Thursday afternoon
would not be far from the truth.
But as special as the day-was for
her, she can be considered entitled.
The Eagle outside hitter signed a
letter of intent to play volleyball for
Tyler Junior College next season.
Lyons was named the District 21-
4A offensive player of the year this
season and will join a team that was
ranked eighth in the nation with a
34-6 record.
“When I woke up this morning, I
was calm and collected,” Lyons said.

stressful. You think you’re ready for
it and then it just overwhelms you.”
