Oldest-ever manager
gets booted
FORT WORTH (AP) — Bobby
Bragan hinted weeks before his
history-making appearance as
manager of the Fort Worth Cats .
that he might get tossed out of
the game.
Sure enough, the 87-year-old
was in the stands signing auto-
graphs Tuesday night when he
officially became the oldest man-
ager of a pro baseball game. He
swears that wasn’t the plan.
“Sure wasn't,” said Bragan,
who managed the Cats for one
game to surpass Hall of Famer
Connie Mack by eight days.
A Destiny Mason kill forced
another timeout at 17-9 but the
timeout did little to stop the
momentum as Sterling extend-
ed the lead to 21-9 en route to
winning the first game; .
Dickinson found themselves
in striking range midway
through the second game. A
Michael Heinrich block made
the score 13-7, Heinrich came
up big moments later, when a
dink found the floor, to make
the score 18-12. Heinrich foj-
BAYTOWN — After open-
ing the season with a mark of
1-2, Lee volleyball coach
Leslie Roberts said the Lady
Ganders just worked on the
basics in practice.
In their home opener
Tuesday night, REL handed
Aldine Nimitz your basic butt-
whipping. Using a great block-
ing night, timely serving, and
several N imitz errors, the Lady
Ganders swept the visitors by
scores of 25-18, 25-21, and
25-18. -
■ ■ The victory evened REL’s
record at 2-2.
“We worked on a couple of
things — just basics,” Roberts
said. “Just set and hit.
“Julie Bartrip and Shardae
Philogene had great blocking
games.”
The tone for the match was
set right off the bat, The Lady
Ganders’ Lori Ward served six
consecutive points to open the
match, as Nimitz committed
four unforced errors. From
that point on, the game was
nip-and-tuck as Lee never
trailed.
Nimitz did rally to within
three points on four occasions
— the last being at 14-11 —
but REL reeled off three
straight points to again take a
six-point lead, and from that
point they never looked back.
The second game was clos-
er, but the Lady Ganders made
the plays when they needed to.
HOUSTON - Greg
Maddux outdueled Andy
Pettitte for seven innings, and
Aramis Ramirez homered and
doubled twice to help the
Chicago Cubs snap a six-
game road losing streak with a
4-1 victory over the Houston
Astros on Tuesday night.
Maddux (10-9) allowed just
three hits — his fewest since
May — and shut down the
Astros after Houston scored
12 runs on 16 hits the previous
; night. ■■
Kerry Wood pitched a per-
fect eighth for his sixth score-
less relief appearance, and
Ryan Dempster worked the
ninth for his 17th save in 19
chances.
With the win, the Cubs
pulled within 6 1/2 games of
Houston in the NL wild-card
race.
It was just the second loss
since June for Pettitte (10-9).
After Chad Qualls relieved
Pettitte in the eighth, the Cubs
tacked on another run when
Nomar Garciaparra scored.
• The Astros started the night
where they left off Monday.
Rookie Willy Taveras dropped
a triple into deep right field on
Maddux’s first pitch, then
scored one batter later.
Adam Everett doubled in
the second, and Taveras beat
out a short chopper in the
third. Maddux then walked
Lance Berkman, but it would
be the last baserunner
