• Security is a tenuous proposition at
best. The recently disclosed plan by ter-
rorists to detonate explosives on air
flights from Britain to the United States
is a graphic example of the imperative for
check points in airports.
Travelers have certainly forfeited many
freedoms due to the intrusiveness these
searches, but virtually everyone is sup-
portive of these measures. Airport securi-
ty measures are both a contrast and a
comparison regarding soul security. The
comparison is that rational individuals
will give attention to both spiritual and
physical security.

■ __.cation through the No Child Left
Behind law has not helped schools
improve. So there’s no reason for a federal
takeover of higher education.
The No Child Left Behind law sought to
provide accountability for schools’
. progress or lack thereof. It required stan-
dardized testing and set federal measures
foj evaluating progress along with mea-
sures to be taken if schools didn’t meet
those standards....
Now, a federal commission wants to
extend that record of federal failure to col-
leges and universities.
The Commission on the Future of
Higher Education wants colleges to use
standardized tests and wants the federal
government to keep track of the results
and the quality of higher education.
There is no reason for a federal role in
evaluating or tracking college perfor-
mance. These are state and private institu-
tions. They are neither owned nor operated
by the federal government.

X JkThursday morning at Denver
International Airport, guess who else had
to repack their luggage before flying? The
Denver Broncos, who took a charter flight
to Detroit for Friday’s preseason contest
with the Lions.
We’re not suggesting the team rates spe-
cial treatment. But the spectacle of known
celebrities who clearly pose no risk having
to endure the latest airport security mea-
sures highlights how far the Transportation
Security Administration seems to have
overreached in trying to thwart potential
terrorists....
In no way do we minimize the heroic
and difficult work necessary to take down
this potentially lethal terrorist conspiracy.
But surely TSA isn’t poised to ban all car-
ryon liquids on a permanent basis given
the potential problems it would inflict
upon millions of Americans who fly with-
out checking their baggage.
These new restrictions are out of whack,
and should be lifted immediately.

Way to go Exxon - not
Paranoia strikes deep, into your life it
will creep... (With apologies to Buffalo
Springfield)
I’m acquainted with more than a few
of the local Exxon Mobil retirees having
worked in the refinery doing environ-
mental work for 29 years myself as a
contract draftsman. And, I know one or
two of those who now serve on the board
of their local annuitants’ organization.
In addition to their monthly meetings
these former employees enjoy a barbecue
lunch each quarter... which is fine. And,
as 1 understand it, the company con-
tributes to the costs of this lunch. No
Problem. Then I learned the details:
If they anticipate 600 guests they’ll
order 625 lunches... and maybe only 580
folks will show up. Meaning they have
45 lunches too many. Which they throw
away.
“So” says I, why not give them to the
Women’s Center or one of the local nurs-
ing homes? And the reply was, “well we
would but the “Tiger’s” legal department
said “no” because someone might get
sick and sue.” Do what?
Our beloved local petroleum pirates
held the Nation hostage to the tune of
$ 10 billion last quarter but they’re too
damned aloof to share a lunch with a
needy battered mother out of fear that
they might be sued? They’d probably
rather sell her a few gallons of three
buck gas!
Way to go Exxon. You showed your
butt on this one.

I don't like wars because I have seen the

You would not enjoy the freedoms you
have today if not for those who served
this country in the military.
You try to bash President Bush on
many false*stated items, but you get on
the defense when 1 stated true facts about
President Clinton years that did discredit
the Democratic party and our country.
Many foreign countries look at a presi-
dent of our country as a reflection of its
people. Democrats and Republicans all
were upset by Clintons actions in White
House, also it was found out about his

A couple of weeks ago, I went to an
Astros game with my family. Right after
the game started, my cell phone rang and
my brother Steve (who knew that I was at
the game) was on the other end. “Hey,” he
said. “Are you sitting next to Drayton
McLane (the owner of the Astros) in those
“primo” seats behind home plate?” “Very
fonny, “I said. “You know that I don’t have
the money to be sitting by rich people like
the owner of the Astros.”
But Steve was asking me a serious ques-
tion, and 1 didn’t realize it. He went on to
tell me that he was watching the game on
TV and there was a guy sitting right next to
Drayton behind home plate that was the
spitting image of me, the school principal
turned preacher from Baytown, Texas! I
think he actually believed that I had some-
how “smooth-talked” my way into the
owner of the Astros’ “inner circle.” After I

world now, I also agree that the planning
done by both Democrat and Republican
leaders lacked good judgement for the
type of war being fought. It is essential
that our leaders agree on a plan against
terrorism and get our troops out of

Calvin, the bogeyman is here, but we
call them terrorists and they appeared

Calvin Cormier your letter to the edi-
tor on Aug.9th really showed your lack
of knowledge of Clinton years. You stat-
ed America was not attacked under Bill
Clinton's watch, then explain to me why
the World Trade Center was bombed on
Feb. 26,1993? And it had Iraqi involve-
ment, wasn't that in Clinton years? And
why were Marines barracks bombed and

before you put out such false propaganda
sir. You made negative statements against
our troops of the past and present by say-

blow up civilians. You really are a dis-
