Art League selects Artist of the Month
Baytown Artist Joanna (Susie) Miller is February's
Artist of the Month at Sterling Municipal Library.
Miller's oil painting “Garden Flowers” is located on a
table easel in the center of the library.
Joanna Gail Miller (Susie) and her husband Damon
have three children and have lived in Baytown for 37
years. Miller, who is accomplished in ceramics and
woodcrafts, took up painting when a neighbor saw some
of her sketches, encouraged her to put her ideas on can-
vas, and introduced her to artist and teacher, Peggy
Tieman of Highlands. This led to lessons and a friend-
ship that lasted for 25-years. Tieman encouraged Susie to
join the Art League of Baytown four-years-ago, which
gave her the opportunity to display and sell her art and
Center, located at 2407 Market St. in Baytown. Meetings
begin at 2 p.m. with a brief agenda followed by a demon-
stration by a visiting artist. The meetings are open to the
public and guests are invited to join. Membership is $25
annually.
The next meeting will be Feb. 17, with noted Kingwood
artist Diane Buckhout. Buckhout has a refreshing and
exciting approach to realistic art. Utilizing a technique
used by many of the Old Masters, layered oil glaze, she
creates a delicate misty quality to her work. For more
information, call 281-427-1114.
My cousin Margaret out in
California sends me the best e-
mails. She sent one the other day
that discussed AAADD or age-
activated attention deficit disor-
der.
There’s no doubt I’ve got it -1
do exactly this sort of thing!
Here’s part of the e-mail.
I decide to water my garden.
As I turn on the hose in the
driveway, I look over at my car
and decide it needs washing.
I start toward the garage, but
notice mail on the porch table
that I brought up from the mail-
box earlier.
I decide to go through the
mail before 1 wash the car.
I lay my car keys on the table,
pull the bills out of the mail, put
the junk mail in the garbage can
under the table and notice that
the can is full. —;
So I put the bills back on the
table and take out the garbage
first. But then 1 think since I’m
going to be near the mailbox
when I take out the garbage any-
way, I may as well pay the bills
first.
I take my checkbook off the
table and see that there is only
one check left.
My extra checks are in the
desk in the study, so I go inside
the house to the desk where I
find the can of soda I’d been
drinking.
I’m going to look for more
checks but first I decide to put
the soda in the refrigerator to
keep it cold.
As I head toward the kitchen
with the soda a vase of flowers
on the counter catches my eye -
they need water.
I put the soda on the counter
and discover my reading glasses
that I’ve been searching for all
morning. I decide to put them
back on the desk, but first I’m
going to water those flowers.
I set the glasses back on the
counter, fill a container with
water and suddenly spot the TV
remote. Somebody left it on the
kitchen table.
I realize we’ll be searching for
that later so I decide to put it
back in the den where it belongs,
but first I’ll water the flowers.
I pour some water in the flow-
ers, but quite a bit of it spills on
the floor so I set the remote back
on the table, get some towels and
wipe up the spill, then head
down ±e hall trying to remem-
ber what I was planning to do.
At the end of the day the car is
not washed, the bills are not
paid, there is a warm can of soda
sitting on the counter, the flow-
ers don’t have enough water,
there is still only one check in
the checkbook, 1 can’t find the
remote, I can’t find my glasses
and I don’t remember what I did
with the car keys.
My old friend Jean Shepherd
has a term for this condition.
She calls me a “flitter.” She says
I flit around doing a little of this
and a little of that.
She’s right, but having a nice,
scientific-sounding name for it
makes it seem much better.
After years of flitting, I have
developed solutions for some of
the AAADA-related problems.
I drink iced tea instead of
soda. When I misplace my glass
of tea for an hour or two or six it '
doesn’t go flat and if it has got-
ten warm I can just add more
ice. If it gets to a point where I
am drinking more water (from
the melted ice) than tea, I pat
myself on the back for drinking
nice healthy water.
I got tired of searching for my
reading glasses so I bought sev-
eral cheap at a flea market and
keep a pair in almost every room
of die house, plus one in the car
in my purse.
Now, if only I could do that
with my car keys!
