Red-light cameras
1 have been noticing signs around
town asking people to vote against red
light cameras. I realize paying for a tick-
et stinks; however, red lights are in place
to save people’s lives. Sadly many people
don’t realize the importance of stopping
on red and injure/kill people. I am
someone who was a victim of this sever-
al years ago. On Highway 146 a man
ran a red light and hit my driver-side
door. I was pinned in my car by the door
on my leg, my head shattered my win-
dow (I still have glass that comes out of
my head), and I had to have the Jaws of
Life cut me out. I was Life Flighted to
Hermann with head trauma and bleed-
ing in my brain. 1 broke six ribs where
they connect to my spine and broke my
pelvis in two places. I had to be in a
wheelchair/walker for quite a while. So,
for people who want the cameras gone-
boo hoo. If you were following the law
and not running the lights you wouldn’t
need to worry about it. If those lights
can keep someone from experiencing
what my family and I did, then they
need to stay. I bet if you asked my mom,
who had to take the phone call about
her daughter being Life Flighted due to
a car wreck, she would tell you the same
thing. .

Here’s the storv:
Garrett is a voting man ot 17 who
is living with Duchcnc muscular

order that involves rapidly worsen-
ing muscle weakness. 1 Topic with
the disorder rarelv five past the age

Symptoms usually appear before
the age of 6 and the ability to w alk
is often lost bv the age of 12, when
most patients are

i he is now limited
to a wheelchair or
bed and riding in
cars.
My friend sees
Garrett w hen he
and his dad come to visit my
friend's neighbor. They drive up and
park, then Garrett’s dad carries his
son into the neighbor’s house. The
dad and the rest of Garrett’s family,
vou see, are devoted to seeing that
Garrett gets out and about and has
as normal a life as possible. Doing
that is getting tougher and tougher
because the disease is progressing
and Garrett is growing, as all 17-
vcar-old boys arc prone to do. He
would be a strapping young man if
he were able to stand straight and
■. tall.
There is no known Cure for
Duchenne muscular dystrophy. T he
only treatment goals are to control
symptoms to maximize the quality
of life.
My friend says that not too long
ago, Garrett had surgery to put a
rod in his back because he was los-
ing the ability to s-it up. The proce-
dure was successful and improved
his ability to ride in the wheelchair
and to sit up in bed to watch TV.
That's a big deal to Garrett. He is
a big NASCAR fan and loves
watching races on TV, as well as
visiting all things NASCAR on his
computer. He has entered a contest
that could win him a trip to a big
NASCAR race and everybody out
there can help him do it.
Toyota Racing has a contest
called “Sponsafy Your Ride."
Visitors to a Web site can design
the graphic art for a Toyota racecar.
The design goes up on the Web site
and people can vote for their
favorites — one vote per day until
the deadline, which is March 15.
Ten finalists will be chosen for
additional balloting. The winner
will get a trip in May to the 2010
Nascar Sprint All-Star race and .
events in Charlotte, N.C.
Garrett’s design is called “Ain’t
Scared" and I think it is a great one. <

The other nine finalists will win
racing helmets that feature their own
designs, plus tickets to the race events.
Winning would be such a big
deal for Garrett. He’s been to
NASCAR events before, but it is
getting more and more difficult for
him to make such trips. Family and
friends would love to give him such
a huge and wonderful experience
while ... well, you know.
You can help.
All you have to do it go to the
contest Web site and vote. Here’s a
Web address that will take you
straight to Garrett’s car design —

Once you’re on that site, you just
click on a button to vote for
Garrett’s design. You can do that
once a day until the initial voting
ends, then again for 15 days if he
makes it to the finals.
So help if you can. I’ve already
gotten started and I’m voting for
Garrett daily.
