It's a rematch Carthage
coach Mike Bickham has
waited for since 2004, the
year Newton knocked his
Brookshire-Royal team out of
the state playoffs.
Bickham has been to the
playoffs since, taking
Carthage into the second
round of Class AAA, Division
I (area) competition in his
first year here in 2005.
Newton has been about as
often as any team in Texas,
going perfect in 13 games to
w in a class AA crown.
The Eagles are No. 1 in the
Harris Ratings this week
behind defending class AAA
Tatum, which was realigned
in February to avoid another
meeting with the Dawgs in
district competition.
Newton couldn't pick a bet-
ter time than Carthage
Homecoming, which is
always a big, week-long dis-
traction of the football team.
"We want them to have
firn, but we have business to
take care of and 1 think they
understand that," Bickham
said.
The Dawgs are favored by
15 points in Harris Ratings,
primarily because Carthage
has been demolishing oppo-
nents behind the rushing and
passing of QB Marcus
Bowman (667 yards total
offense) and the rushing and
receiving of Justin Myers
(538 all-purpose yards). Both
have scored five TDs.
In three games Carthage
*- has 135 points. It has already
< gotten 21 from place kicker
filed.
He thought the five was the
goal-line, the field was so
brilliantly marked. Myers was
still on the go and was finally
bounced down at the two.
After a gathering of the
stripes, no touchdown was
allowed, a fumble was ruled
and Pittsburg took possession
at the two.
That's probably what
would have happened if the
play had been called correctly,
but by blowing the ball dead
several yards up field,
Carthage should have retained
possession by rule.
Not a happy camper by
now anyway, Bickham went
onto the field to argue his
cause, to no avail.
After such an exciting start,
the rest was about hard hit-
ting, visiting the end zone
more often to deliver the ball
to the referees and pouring it
on.
Asked at halftime 8 why
grown men would rag sqihard
on kids playing a game one
of the chain crew shot|xtck
that it was more than a lame
at stake, perhaps, to so je of
