“We had a formation and a class
with the battalion to show how
to properly use dry sweep and
the items in a spill kit,” he said.
“With spill kits strategically placed
throughout the motor pool and at
the end of each of line, our Soldiers
are knowledgeable on how to con-
tain a spill quickly and safely.”
Taking command two months
ago, Lt. Col. Tasha Lowery plans to
leverage Nutter and Tylers knowl-
edge to gain a better understanding
of the installation’s environmental
standards.

going to teach me as a leader and
continue this environmental effort,
when they are gone and doing big-

Warrant Officer 3 Alexander Perez,
an automotive maintenance warrant
officer in HHB, 1st Cav. Div., said.

The Headquarters and Headquar-
ters Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division
and Spc. Samantha Goebel, 104th
Engineer Construction Company,
36th Engineer Brigade, are exceed-
ing environmental standards, bal-
ancing both mission readiness and
environmental stewardship and
achieving 100 percent on their
assessments.
“The HHB and Spc. Goebel
have addressed environmental com-
pliance, consistently, with exempla-
ry dedication to exceed the stan-
dard,” Glenn Collier, Environmen-
tal Compliance Assessment Team
team leader, Fort Hood Directorate
of Public Works, said. “Their sup-
port of Fort Hood’s environmental
program is a reflection of their com-
mitment to stewardship.”
Recognized for their proactive
environmental approach, HHB and
Goebel were presented the military
unit and military individual award
for Environmental Stewardship at
the recent Hood Hero Award Cer-

ECC, Goebel has helped create a
culture of compliance within the
unit’s footprint.
“Every single day she is focused on
making sure we are compliant and is
empowered to make a difference,”
Capt. Diana Bojorquez, command-
er, 104th ECC, 36th Eng. Bde, said.
“Spc. Goebel has taken on this role
as the ECOA, and she’s built a cul-
ture of environmental compliance,
helping everyone understand what
it takes to be right and helping our
company and our sister company to
get right.”
On daily walkthroughs, Goebel
can be found conducting checks and
ensuring compliance of the oil water
separator, used product reclamation
point, and motor pool bays.
“Spc. Goebel participates dur-
ing courtesy assessments correcting
issues or taking notes on what needs
a little attention or more emphasis,”
Collier said. “She asks questions and
applies common sense to ensure her
unit has a successful environmental
program. Her involvement has had
a direct effect on the 62nd Eng.
Bn.’s continued environmental suc-
cess.”
When Goebel identifies a defi-
ciency, she is quick to address it to
the platoon and use the opportunity
to educate her fellow Soldiers. She
further explained her formula for
success.
“Through leadership involve-
ment, communication and team
work, any unit can be successful
and get a 100 on their assessment
just as easy as we can,” Goebel said.
“I’m happy for the recognition but
I couldn’t do it without my team.”
Bojorquez added it’s about lead-
ers empowering the right individual
that will take ownership of the unit’s
environmental program.
“Find the right person who is
going to care as much as Spc. Goeb-
el does and empower that individual
to own his or her role and help cre-
ate a climate where everyone knows
what right looks like and works to
achieve it,” Bojorquez said.

While supporting the 1st Cav.

compliance and promoting environ-
