general information for this
type of excursion, so we decid-

authors of books which dealt
with bicycling, and we joined
organizations such as

"One man. whom 1
always remember,
Howlandberry, a teacher in
England who earlier had cycl-
ed the full length of the Andes,
helped us in planning our trip
We invited him over to discuss
what necessities were needed
for the trip Finally, after
three hours of discussion, he
closed his book and siad.
Look, all you really need is a
toothbrush "
Not only was preparing a
backpack a necesity for the
young English couple, but also
shaping up for the trip was re-
quired According to Eric.
"We would work out at a local
gym. as you would call
get in shape for this
journey "
Leaving Britian on
English handmade bicycles
with their necessities in a
backpack, the Stockleys
began their journey last
November. Of course, travel-
ing across the ocean was on
boat, but was done cheaply To
help defray expenses the
Stockleys sometimes washed
dishes on the boat.
Arriving in America the
Stockleys first stopped in
Florida where they met with
misfortune According to
Eric, "We had a near fatal ac-
cident at Crystal River I suf
fered a broken rib and Jill suf-
fered torn ligaments " After
the accident, the two cyclists
made their way to Kansas
where they rested with some
A goal as Webster defines it
is “...an object or end one
strives to attain...*'. For Eric
and Jill Stockley of Yorkshire,
England, the road to their goal
is a long one, literally
Twenty-nine-year-old Eric
and his wife, Jill 22, plan to
travel around the world as
their goal. The only thing dif-
lerent about their journey is
that the Stockleys are travel-
ing by bicycle
Why are the two British
natives doing this? "Three
years ago we started panning
to buy a house," Eric said
“We worked as nurses in a
hospital saving our money
However, when the chance
came up to buy one, we didn't
have enough money so we lost
out on the house "
"We then took a look at life
and what we were doing with
ours and we realized if we had
bought the house we would be
tied down with a mortgage
and would always be working
to pay off the house ”
"We then began to look for
something more to life,
something challenging to do,"
he continued "We didn't want
to look back and say 'if only
we had done this or that...’ We
decided now was the time to
do it while we still could. "
Apparently driving around
the world wasn't challenging
enough, so they decided to
"take it one step further" and
use bikes instead^ a "land
rover” Not only did this “cut
down" the cost but also the
hassel of transporting the
vehicle overseas
Of course, a lot of prepara-
tion was made for the long
voyage "We did not know
much about equipment and
