Two Taize worship services offer rich lenten experiences
Carthage residents will
have an opportunity to experi-
ence spiritually enriching
worship services as St. John’s
Episcopal Church offers two
Taize worship services as a
part of its Wednesday evening
observances during lent.
On Wednesday, February
27, the church will offer a
Taize evening prayer at 6 p.m.
On Wednesday, March 5, the
church will offer a Taize
prayer service with commun-
ion. Both services will be fol-
lowed by a soup supper. The
church extends an invitation
to all who are interested in
discovering more about this
uniquely 20th century ecu-
menical religious practice and
experience.
The movement is named
for Taize, a village
Burgundy where this ecu-
menical community of reli-
gious brothers was founded
by Brother Roger, who was a
Protestant from Switzerland.
At the time that the
Germans overran France in
WW1I, they established a line
across France separating
occupied France from a sup-
posedly free France. Roger
Schutz rode a bicycle 240
miles from Geneva,
Switzerland to Taize in unoc-
cupied France, just beyond
the demarcation line.
For two years, Brother
Roger and his sister hid
Jewish refugees and others
fleeing the Gestapo. They
borrowed money from people
at home to feed the refugees.
They worked there until
1942 when they were

betrayed, but both escaped
because a French village
policeman gave them a warn-
ing that they had been discov-
ered.
After the liberation of
France, Roger Schutz
returned to the people of
Taize to establish the first
ecumenical religious commu-
nity in Europe.
For 65 years, the religious
community grew under his
leadership and today attracts
tens of thousands of pilgrims
each year. It has a special
ministry to young people.
In 2005, 90-year-old
Brother Roger was stabbed to
death in a prayer service at
Taize by a deranged woman
from Romania.
Today, Taize services focus
on meditative music, silence,
and prayer. Singing is one of
the most essential elements of
worship. Short songs, repeat-
ed again and again, give it a
meditative character. Using
just a few words they express
a basic reality of faith, quick-
ly grasped by the mind. As the
words are sung over many
times, this reality gradually
penetrates the whole being.
Meditative singing thus
becomes a way of listening to
God. It allows everyone to
take a part in a time of prayer
together and to remain togeth-
er in an attentive waiting on
God.
"While everyone is certain-
ly welcome to participate as
fully as possible in such a
service, just sitting quietly
while the service moves along
can be most fulfilling,” says
Charles Hughes, St. John's
Senior Warden.
"If a person has been look-
ing for a source a peace in a
world that seems to work
against contentment, then that
person might want to visit
with us on one of these
evenings," says Hughes.
