yard unsportsmanlike con-
duct penalty on the ensuing
kickoff.
PRIOR TO THAT score,
the Elks had another chance
to go ahead when they took
over in good field position at
the Western Hills 39. They
were tagged with a delay of
game penalty on fourth and
four and were forced to punt,
but a clipping penalty
against the Cougars put the
Elks right back in business,
this time on the Western
Hills 23. Three plays later,
after two running plays and
an incompleted pass, the
Elks were facing fourth and
11 from the 24 yard line and
Melvie Renfro attempted his.
first field goal of the season.
The ball fell short and West-
ern Hills took over on the 20
yard line where they began
their short 80 yard scoring
drive.
The Cougars were helped
along in that drive by a
personal foul penalty against
Burleson.
Western Hills only had to
travel three yards for its
final touchdown as Landing-
ham went back to attempt a
desperation pass in the final
minute of play and was
trapped for an 18 yard loss
inside the Elk five. Quarter-
back Ronnie Tubbs carried
twice and got the ball down
to the one yard line where
fullback Cal Wood dived
over for the score with four
seconds remaining in the
game.
TOMORROW NIGHT the
Elks play their first home
game of the season, meeting
Weatherford in an 8 p.m.
contest at Elk stadium.
Last year the Kangaroos
took advantage of a multi-
tude of Burleson errors to
take a 33-7 win over the
Elks. In fact, Burleson has
always had trouble with the
Kangaroos. Their last win
.over Weatherford came in
1969 as Burleson was on its
way to winning the district
championship of 3A-5.
JUMP BALL—The Elks’ Robby Bransom
[white jersey 1 and Billy Leseman of the
Western Hills Cougars both got a hand on
this fourth quarter pass from Tim Land-
ingham, but neither of them could bring it
down and it fell incomplete. Burleson was
two touchdowns behind at this point ajid
trying to get something started to get
back into the game. Two plays later,
however, a Landingham fumble was
caught in the air and ran in for a Cougar
touchdown to put the game out of reach.
Western Hills added still another score on
a short three yard drive in the final
seconds of the game to make the score
27-0. Star Staffoto.
Seventh graders will play
at Elk Stadium while the
eight grade will travel to
Everman for their games. At
both locations the “B” team
game will get underway at 6
p.m.
Tips On Bicycling
Enjoying a bicycle means
riding it safely. Here are some
tips on preventing you—or
someone you know—from
joining the approximately
460,000 people who are hos-
pitalized for bicycle-related
injuries each year.
AFTER TAKING OVER
on their own 27 yard line
following a Western Hills
ibunt, Steve Oakley carried
Twice up the middle for
♦Burleson and picked up nine
yards. Guiliani picked up the
first down on a four yard run
and then scampered 15 yards
on a pitchout before quarter-
back Tim Landingham was
caught for a one yard loss on
a keeper play.
It was Guiliani two more
times after that, once up the
middle for seven and around
the right side for nine,
before Oakley carried for
three yards to end the first
quarter.
On the first play of the
second quarter, the Elk tail-
back carried for 12 yards on
a pitchout and gave Burleson
a first down on the Cougar
14 yard line.
From there he carried
around left end twice to give
the Elks a third and two
... from the six yard line. The
drive stalled on the five,
though, as Guiliani was stop-
ped for no gain on third
down and was dropped at
the five on a fourth down
attempt.
Western Hills struck sud-
denly near the end of the
fourth quarter as tailback
Gary Lang burst through the
middle of the Elk line for 48
yards and a touchdown. That
run gave the Cougars a 7-0
lead and also illustrated a
new rule on sportsmanship
put into effect this year.
[Lang turned and waved
[goodbye to the Elk defend-
ers as he was nearing the
goal line and then did a little

conversion on all three
touchdowns.
The freshman took an
early 7-0 lead when wing-
back Dick Nash raced five
yards on a reverse in the
first quarter and Richard
Miles kicked the extra point.
At halftime, the Elk frosh
were still clinging to a 7-6
lead, but the Cougars added
14 more points in the second
half to win.
Tonight, the freshman and
JV teams will be trying to
reverse their fortunes
against Weatherford as they
travel to the Kangaroos
stadium for games beginning
at 5:00.

A full schedule of games is
on tap for football teams
from Pauline G. Hughes Mid-
dle School next Tuesday
evening as both seventh and
eighth grade teams will be
facing Everman.
They’ll be hoping to fare a
little better than this past
Tuesday night when the
eighth grade began its sea-
son and had only a tie to
show for its efforts in two
games.
The “B” team was involv-
ed in the tie, a scoreless
deadlock with Weatherford.
Good defensive play was
turned in by linebackers
Greg Green and Paul “Bob-
cat” Peterson. Pass inter-
ceptions were picked off by
Jeff English and Terry Tayl-
or.
Allen Nichols broke for a
30 yard touchdown run and
tight end Terry Ford scored
on a pass and run play that
covered 45 yards, but it
wasn’t quite enough for the
“A” team as they lost 20-12.
Ward Whites was also
cited by coaches for his
performance in the game at
both fullback and tailback.
Coaches said that there
were no injuries in either
game and that the “A” team
would be working on pass
protection this week.
The Elks haven’t changed ballcarriers. He was instru-
their colors from the tradi- mental in the one sustained
tional red and black, but ► drive the Elks were able to
green was the color most 1 put together, carrying the
evident last Thursday night I ball all but four plays on a 13
as Burleson was blanked 27-0 I play drive that covered 73
by Western Hills at Farring-1 yards^^
ton Field.
Actually, the game was
closer than the score would
seem to indicate, but the
Elks on numerous occasions
fell victim to their own
inexperience, especially in
the second half.
The Elks were plagued by
a half dozen fumbles-one of
which was picked up in the
air and ran in for a Cougar
touchdown-an interception
and costly penalties during
the game. A roughing the
kicker penalty led to the
second Western Hills touch-
down after the Elk defense
had apparently stopped the
Cougar attack. Given new
life on the Burleson 30,
Western Hills punched over
for the score five plays later
to take a 14-0 lead.
Five offsides penalties and
a delay of game also slowed
the Elk offense.
Bobby Guiliani was a
bright spot in that Elk
offense before leaving the
game in the third quarter
with an injury. While he was
in there at his tailback
position, he picked up 108
yards on 18 carries to lead all
