Hawley won everything but
the scoreboard in the game,
but they self destructed with
three fumbles and three in-
terceptions.
The Bearcats are a young
team and rely on the ex-
perience of six offensive and
six defensive starters. They
started seven sophomores in
the 1984 campaign so the fu-
ture looks bright.
Kevin Sullivan is the leading
ground gainer for the Bear-
cats. He is joined in the back-
field by QB Jake Womack and
FB Wesley Greenway. ,
The offensive line is an-
chored by returning starters
Matt Morrow at center, Stuart
New and Kelly Chittum at
guard and Frankie Coskey at
tackle. Guard Joe Baker and
nose guard Jerry Schmidt are
other lettermen.
Top newcomers for Hawley
include big Chris Meador who
brings 210 pounds to his tackle
position, receiver Kent
Cribbs, wingback Cliff Bris-
tow, ends Richard Steward
and Pat Shupe and wingback
Bobby Faulks. Jeff Sellers, a
Hamlin wasted little time in
moving the ball into the end
zone from the Bulldog 16.
Runs by Howerton and McGee
and a personal foul call
against the Dogs left the
Pipers facing first and goal
from the 3. McGee took the
bail that short distance and
the score stood at 12-0 Pipers.
Once again the PAT attempt
was no good
The Bulldogs started one of
their best drives of the night
on their next possession. Pete
Moreno set the Dogs up in
good field position with his
kickoff return and the Pipers
gave another 15 yards with a
roughing the passer call. Runs
by Cody and Isaac Cooper
with a little Deice added for
good measure moved the ball
from the Stamford 43 to the
Hamlin 26 before the drive
stalled when Deice was caught
for a loss as he attempted a
pass on fourth and four
The Bulldogs almost got the
ball right back as Howerton
fumbled on the Pipers second
play from scrimmage. Instead
of falling on the ball, Bulldog
defenders attempted to pick
up the ball and it turned up in
the hands of a Pied Piper for a
nifty 15 yard gain
With the ball sitting at the
Hamlin to only one score late
in the third quarter.
Pied Pipers have one tough
football team and deserve all
those high ratings.
The Pipers blew open a
close contest with three
touchdowns in a span of 1:21 in
the third quarter. Bulldog
mistakes led to two Piper TDs
in the span of 15 seconds as
Hamlin scored on the first
play after recovering a Tim
Deice fumble at the Dog 26
yard line and then intercepted
Cody Cooper’s pass on the first
play after the kickoff.
If there is a chink in the
Green and White armor, it
may be in the kicking game.
The Pipers and James Cork
were only 1-5 in PAT attempts
and Mike Howerton had one
punt attempt blocked and his
four others only went for a 17
yard average Of course he
was trying to keep the ball out
of the hands of Deice pn those
punt returns.
The Bulldogs hurt their
chances with two intercep-
tions and three lost fumbles as
well as nickeling themselves
to death with 5 yard penalties
The Dogs were flagged 10
times on the night for 66 yards
with one of the penalties call-
ing back a touchdown catch
and run by John Gardner
Gardner had been a little too
eager to go upfield in his mo-
tion and was flagged for the in-
fraction to wipe the points
from the board
Hamlin started their scoring
the second time they got the
ball They used a nine play
drive to go KO yards to pay
dirt The two big plays in the
drive were a 31 yard run by
FB Dave Daniel, who could
have had the TD if not for a
saving tackle by Phillip Swin-
ney. and a 15 yard jaunt by
Coy McGee The scoring play
in front of the next Piper
aerial and returned it 24 yards
to end the Hamlin threat.
The Bulldogs were able to
move the ball out to their own
45 as time expired in the half.
The Bulldogs received the
second half kickoff but were
unable to earn the yardage for
a first down and were forced
to punt.
The Pied Pipers took over
on their 34 and went to work on
the clock and the scoreboard.
They used a 13 play drive to
find the Bulldogs' end zone
once more. Key plays in the
drive were runs of 12 and 15
yards by McGee and an 11
yard pass to Piske in a fourth
and seven situation. Howerton
covered the final six yards
himself for a 18-0 Piper lead.
The pass attempt for two was
batted down.
Two plays later the Pipers
were back in business follow-
ing a Deice fumble at the 26
An interference call against
Kuentsler moved the ball even
closer to the goal line and Coy
McGee took a pitch and loped
in from 16 for a 24-0 score. The
kick attempt was blocked.
McGee decided that scoring
offensively was so much fun
he would try it from his defen-
sive position too. He picked off
the first Cooper pass and
brought it back the 31 yards to
match his jersey number for
the final Hamlin TD of the
night. Cork’s kick was good
this time for a 31-0 advantage.
The Stamford Bulldogs will
face the Hawley Bearcats in a
must-win situation Friday
night in Hawley. For the Dogs
to have even a glimmer of
hope for getting into the play-
offs they must come off the
field with a victory.
They will need help in the
form of an Anson victory over
Haskell and then a lucky flip
of a coin to decide the winner
of the three way tie.
The eventual district run-
ner-up will face District 5-AA
champ Shallowater. Even if
Shallowater should lose Fri-
day night they would advance
as champion by virtue of their
victory over Morton.
The Bearcats of Coach Mike
Davis will be trying for their
second district win and their
fourth of the year. A 4-6 record
doesn’t sound that good, but
the Bearcats were 2-8 last
year and have shown marked
improvement this year
In their game last week
against Haskel) the Bearcats
were victims of six turnovers,
one of which turned into the
winning margin by the Indians
as they returned an intercep-
their regular season Friday
night at Hawley while the
Pipers host the Rotan YelloW-
hammers in quest of a perfect

itself was a pass from Hower
ton to Ernie Piske from 16

failed for a 6-0 score with 7:01
left in the first stanza.

Eric brings one back—
Eric Jones (85) picks up good yardage on this interception of a Mike Ho-
werton pass late in the first half of Friday's game between the Bulldogs
and the Hamlin Pied Pipers. Brett Mathews (33), Anthony Gomez (54)
and Phillip Swinney (82) help on the blocking for the 24 yard scamper.
Tommy Smith (12), Ernie Piske (80) and Matalde Gracia (68) try to stop
Jones from advancing the ball. The interception helped, but not enough
as the Dogs fell 31-6 to the Pipers. The Bulldogs will close out the
