The Stamford Bulldogs ran
into some foul weather Friday
night in Olney. Oh yeah, it was
raining on and off throughout
the game. But the real shower
came in the shape of a yellow
flag, which rained on the Dogs
to the tune of 104 yards.

The game with Olney last
Friday night, of course, was a
great concern to me. I was
afraid that the Bulldogs effort
was lacking. After viewing the
film Saturday morning I real-
ized that the hesitation was
not lack of effort, but of inex-
perience. Seven players who
started Friday had not played
defense before or did not play
football last year. Of course
the loss of Hager, Schuchert
and Pham did not help any. I
am confident that you will see
a renewed effort on defense.
We are going back to our ag-
gressive attack style on
defense and I’m certain that
this will improve our play.
TD. But Blue was called for
holding and the touchdown
was called back. The Bulldogs
picked up only 1 yard on the
next play and the ball went
over to Olney.
Olney took advantage of it
and mounted a 70-yard scoring
drive. The key play was a pass
interference called on Bobby
Griffin which kept the Cub
drive alive. Three plays later,
John Cumpton ran 18 yards for
a touchdown. The PAT was no
good and Olney lead 20-7.
Stamford had the last say in
the first half. Michael Young
found Tim Deice along the
sideline for a nice 38-yard
touchdown pass and catch to
pull Blue within seven. Lupe
Moreno converted the poiht
after and Stamford was down
only 20-14 with 46 seconds left
in the first half.
Olney attempted a 43-yard
field goal before halftime, but
the ball hit the crossbar and
was no good.

The Bulldogs have their hands full again
when one of the best AAA teams in the state
comes to town. Iowa Park is ranke4sixth by
the Harris Ratings. This team is among the
toughest Stamford will face this year. The
Hawks have a big team, including pre-sea-
son All Stater Charles Perry (245). They al-
so have a very productive offense. They
have been able to light up the scoreboard,
putting up 90 points in the past three games.
Blue will need good defense and some luck.
The Bulldog’s advantage, if any, will be the
home field and a vocal crowd.

BULLDOG NOTES: Coach
Fred Strickland said the team
had some of its best workouts
of the year this week. The
Bulldog defense will welcome
the return of Senior Jerry
Schuchert this week. Dung
Pham and Merrick Hager are
still out though. Pham may be
out a couple of more weeks,
while Hager is still about a
month away.
However, penalties were
just part of the problem in the
Bulldogs’ 48-21 showing
against Olney. A poor defen-
sive outing, coupled with the
lack of offensive fireworks,

the pigskin for Iowa Park are
Jerry Allen (Senior-175 lb.,
who is also the place kicker),
Phillip Davis (Senior-155 lb.),
and Charles Adams (Senior-
180 lb.), just to name five of
the 12 backs Iowa Park has.
Iowa Park’s rushing game
is helped by an offensive line
that averages 192 pounds.
The Hawks' offense showed
off its power two weeks ago
when it rolled up 512 yards
total offense against
Burkburnett of Class AAAA.
Iowa Park won that game 35-7.
But as good as the offense is,
the Iowa Park defense is bet-
ter. The defense has allowed
less than 7 points a team in the
first three games. They held
Breckenridge to 31 yards on 34
carries.
The main man for the Hawk
is all-stater Charles Perry.
Perry, a senior, is a 245-pound
tackle. He was named one of
the eleven Friday Night
Heroes in this year’s Dave
Campbell’s Texas Football,
which included the best from
all five classifications of foot-
ball in the state. Perry has

It didn’t, take long for the
Cubs to add more points.
Following a fumble by
Michael Young, Olney took

Myers kicked the PAT for a

Coached by David Baugh,
the green-and-white Hawks
are fast becoming a state

week is ranked No. 6 in state in
Class AAA by the Harris
Ratings. Among the few
teams ahead of Iowa Park in
the ratings are Daingerfield,
Littlefield and Kermit.

his thiro and final PAT of the
night for a sedre of 28-21. ,
But the camel’s back was
broken on the next series. On
the kick off, Olney’s Whitt
Murphey had a 70-yard return
to the Stamford 20. The Dogs
were faced for an unsport-
smanlike conduct penalty that
moved the ball down to the 10.
And on the following play,
Cumpton took the 10 strides
for the score and put Olney
back up by two touchdowns.
Olney went for two and failed
and Blue was out of it at 34-21
with 6:30 left in the game.
Olney came back once
more. After Stamford gave up
the ball on four downs, Olney
got the ball on its 37. On the
first play from scrimmage,
Cumpton raced 59-yards
before Bobby Griffin brought
him down on the 4. Cumpton
got the hand off on the next
play and scored. That put
Olney up 40-21 with 3:48 still
left in the third quarter. Myers
kick was good to make it,
41-21.
Stamford had to give up the
ball again just after four
downs. But bad luck struck
again. A bad snap sent the
football sailing over punter
Robert Longoria and Olney
got the ball on the Stamford 4.
Olney’s Enloe passed to
Crozier for the final 48-21,
after Myers made the PAT.
For the night, Wade Shurley
had a respectable 104 yards on
21 carries. Deice finished with
47 yards on 11 carries.
The Bulldog’s were penaliz-
ed 104 yards on 12 penalties.
Four of the penalties were
5-yarders for too much time,
and two more were for per-
sonal fouls.

Iowa Park just lines up and
runs over you. We have a few
new wrinkles to throw at them
to keep them off balance. Our
football team must improve in
every area this week. We must
eliminate mistakes. Fumbles,
missed assignments and
hesitation are hurting us right
now. We are going to improve
and be a playoff caliber team.
One bright spot Friday night
was the extra point kicking of
Lupe Moreno. He kicked 3
without a miss, and that’s a
good sign. Our backs, Tim
Deice and Wade Shurley, both
ran hard and I was proud of
them. Michael Young con-
tinues to amaze me in his per-
formance at QB. He performs
despite the fact that the offen-
sive line was missing the
linebackers blitzing. I’m
afraid we looked much like the
Cowboys against the Giants.
Regardless of that fact, we
still scored three TDs and had
two called back.
We are a long way from be-
ing where we need to be but I
can assure you by district we
will be playing very good foot-
ball.
