Hanna served on the power-

led the fight to expose a con-
troversial bill allowing na-

with cities. City officials later
charged that the bill, if it
had passed, would have cost
millions ot dollars on con-

negotiated in good faith and
with guarantees that there

Man Charged In
Theft Of Cattle
Muenster. — The theft ot
58 head of cattle from Muen-
ster Livestock Auction during
the night of last November 20
was partly solved Tuesday
with the identification of one
animal.
That animal. Sheriff Bill
Pratt said, was a yearling
black Brangus bull, the only
one that could be definitely
identified as one of the stolen
herd.
As a result Delwan Earl
Peoples, 21, of Atoka , Okla-
homa was charged with theft
over $50. He Is in custody
in the Atoka jail.
Sheriff Pratt said the ac-
cused man’s arrest has led to
the recovery of 47 head of
cattle stolen from a Paris
livestock company and two
from a Snyder company.
However it did not help to-
ward recovery of the other
calves stolen from Bill Ham-
er’s Muenster sale barn.
The thieves’ method of op-
eration , as reported toSheriff
Pratt, was to use a pickup
truck with a gooseneck trailer
in loading the animals at a
number of sale barns through -
out North Texas and trans-
porting them to Oklahoma.
Total value of the calves
stolen here was estimated by
Hamer at $8,300. Theiraver-
age weight was 400 pounds.

chances for success.
First, who is the fran-
chisor? If the fanchlsor is
well known, has a good rep-
utation, and has an obviously
successful franchising opera-
tion, you have a better op-
portunity to succeed in your
business. Occasionally, a dis-
honest promoter will use a
franchise name and trademark
deceptively similar to that of a
well - known franchisor. Be
skeptical of franchisors
whose major activity is sell-
ing franchises and whose pro-
fit is primarily derived from
these sales or from the sale
of franchise equipment. Re-
member, the more infor-
mation you learn about the
franchisor and the successes
or failures of indivduals who
have purchased his fran-
chises, the better prepared
you will become to make an
intelligent decision.
Second, you should deter-
mine the length of time the
product has been on the mar-
ket and whether it has enjoy-
ed successful promotion dur-
ing this time. In short, is
It a proven product or ser-
vice or just a gimmick? Ask
yourself whether or not you
are' really Interested in sell-
ing the product or service,
what the future demand will
be, and the nature of the com-
petition you must face in mar-
keting the product.
Third, what is the cost Ot
the franchise? In addition
to the initial cash outlay re-
quired , there may be other
charges, assessments , or
royalties to be paid to the
franchisor, and you may be
required to purchase supplies
from the company rather than
from local sources.
Fourth, what profits can
reasonably be expected from
the franchise operation? Here
again, private investigation on
your part bytalking with pres-
ent franchise owners may pro-
vide facts you will need to
make an intelligent decision.
In any event, the represen-
tations of a promoter concern-

ing projected net profits or
earnings potential should be

Fifth, what training and
management assisUr.ee will
be provided by the franchisor?
It is very important that you
clearly understand the spe-
cific nature ot the training
to be provided. Will It con-
sist only of receiving a man-
ual of instructions or hear-
ing a few lectures? You must
determine whether or not after
taking the training offered you
will be able to operate the
franchise successfully.
Sixth, what are your rights
and obligations under the
terms of the franchise agree
ment contract? Contact your
attorney and listen to his ex-
planation of the terms and
conditions of the contract.
Compare this with the rep-
resentations made to you by
the promoter selling the fran-
chise.
In summary, you should not
rush into signing a contract
or any other document relating
to a franchise promotion, and
you should not make any de-
posits or down payments “to
hold a franchise open” or to
