The 41,000-mile National Sys-
tem of Interstate and Defense
Highway will be, when com-
pleted, the new “backbone” of
our national highway network.
Although it will comprise only
dbout 1.2 percent of our total
,<j nighway mileage, it will carry
at least 20 percent of the total
traffic.
In designing and constructing
such a system, it makes sense to
look into the future and make
allowance for traffic growth.
From the beginning of the In-
terstate construction program,
highway engineers have been
particularly careful to give
thought to tomorrow’s traffic in
the design of each segment of
the System. These route loca-
tions will probably be main high-
>-^vay locations for many decades
to come.
changes and Yanes~7o7 conven-
ience and safety, changes in
traffic data and a change in the
law which directed engineers to
design for the traffic anticipated
20 years in the future.
It would be false economy to
try to save money by cutting
back on the standards. This
would merely force us to go back
and rebuild sections of the In-
terstate System within a few
years time — at substantially
higher cost.
Returning $4 in benefits for
every $1 invested, the Interstate
System remains one of the great
public works bargains of all
time.
reference to a belief in God. What
if -there were no resurrection,
from the dead—then what?
Would anybody be condemned for
having 'believed in the resurrec-
the resurrection
(John 5:28-29).
I “It is appointed unto man once
to die, and after that the judg-
ment” (Hebrews 9:27). This calls
for a resurrection from the dead.
“For we must all appear be-
fore the judgment seat of Christ;
that every one may receive the
things done in the body, accord-
ing to that he hath done, wheth-
er it be good or bad” n Corin-
thians 5:10). This calls for a
resurrection. No one can escape
that resurrection, and woe be un-
■'to those who are not prepared
for it! The safer course by far
is to believe in it, and be ready
for it!
What about the existence of
hell? Is there a hell or not? The
fact of hell’s existence is not
dependent upon our belief or de-
nial of it, but our future with
reference to hell is certainly de-
pendent upon our belief or denial
of it! If there were no hell, no
one would be condemned in it,
but since there is a hell, some
will be condemned in it!
Over and over again, the Bible
tells us how we can escape hell.
It goes without saying then that
the safest course is for man to
accept what the Bible says about
it, and so live that he will not
be punished eternally in hell!
“Fear not them that kill the
body, but are not able to kill the
soul: But rather fear him which
is able to destroy both soul and
body in hell” (Matthew 10:28). '
What about the attitude as to

tures teach? Matthew 7:13, 14

highway has come into general
use, engineers have been able
to learn a great deal about the
design of controlled-access high-
ways built to accommodate high
traffic volumes. The highways
being designed now are going to
be even better than the high-
ways that were designed early
in the progi».m.
These refinements, which will
provide longer highway life and
increased service and safety,
cost a little more. The new re-
vised estimate of the total cost
of the Interstate System is $46.8
billion—about 14 percent higher
than the earlier $41 billion esti-
mate. But unit construction
costs rose only 4.7 percent. More
than $3.6 billion of the increase
is accounted for by improve-
ments brought about by knowl-
edge of better highway design,
the provision of additional inter-
out in the 1950’s have proved to !
be sound. Now about half com-
pleted, the Interstate System is
proving to be even more essen-
tial than was originally antici-
pated. The benefits to highway
users and the economic and so-
cial benefits which affect users
and non-users alike are exceed-
ing the early estimates. For ex-
ample, we now see that the In-
terstate System will save 8,000
lives per year—double the orig-
inal estimate.
Before 1956, there were rela-
tively few miles of highway in
existence built to Interstate type
standards. As this kind of
