Greed and Revenge share the
stage at the Margaret Jonsson
Theatre beginning Wednesday
night, October 13, when the 1993-
1994 season opens with that blackest
of black comedies, The Visit.
In this chilling nightmare fantasy
(which brought its Swiss author,
Friedrich Durrenmatt, international
fame), the richest woman in the
world returns to the now-
dilapidated town of her birth. The
purpose of her return is unclear at
first, but the citizens put all their
hopes in getting her to help them
financially.
After her reunion with Alfred
Ill, her "best friend" when she was a
local teenager, now a broken-down
shopkeeper, she offers the town a
billion dollars. But her gift has a
catch: one condition which turns
the joy of her return to horror and
outrage.
Professor of Drama Patrick Kelly
directs the production, his first since
the epic Richard III for the
Shakespeare Festival of Dallas last
summer.
"It is a pleasure to return to
directing with students on the UD
campus, " Professor Kelly said
recently. “ And particularly with
the present group of players and
technicians, particularly on this
play—which was the first I ever
directed here, back in the sixties."

"Fascinating how one's view of
a work changes over time; The Visit
seemed important for different
reasons then than it does now. One
thing that hasn't changed, however,
is its undeniable theatrical charge—
this is stage fireworks and no doubt
about it.
"This production differs in
almost all respects from my first
one—different version of the script,
different theatre building, different
design ideas, and, of course,
different actors."
The show works through sound
and light and bold theatrical devices,
Kelly explained. Masks, magic
effects, intensely unconventional
lighting all add up to a
"phantasmagoric atmosphere, a
kind of infernal circus."
"Durrenmatt is a flashy and
entertaining writer. At his best he's
on the level of E.T.A. Hoffmann
whose spooky fantasy tales were
popular in the 19th century, a
precursor of Stephen King, really,"
the Director continued. "But the
emotions of the play are strong and
the appeal is very human all the
same.
"A Halloween present for the
UD community," Kelly concluded.
The cast includes Junior Rebecca
Weber, who plays Claire
Zachanassian, the world's richest
woman, and, opposite her, senior
Ben Smith portrays the old boy
friend, Alfred Ill. The town
