At 3 o’clock on Dec. 5,
Professors Wilhelmsen and
Seifert disputed the subject of
essence and existence. For
about two hours they battled
in SLC before an overflow
audience.
Father Fandal, the orga-
nizer and referee, provided a
calming influence with his
mediation (and later his

Bad News in Academia: The
AP reported on Nov. 23 that a
master’s degree candidate at
Lamar University may be
denied a degree because of a
controversy surrounding an
illustration in her thesis.
The thesis is on celestial
navigation and the student
included a photograph of
herself demonstrating the
proper use of a sextant (No,
Sparky, that’s not what you
think it is). The problem is
that she is pictured wearing
only a bikini.
The president and the
graduate dean of the univer-
sity both want the picture
removed, and perhaps the
entire thesis rewritten. Her
faculty advisors on the other
hand, see nothing wrong with
the photo. Undoubtedly, like
all male astronomers, they
support the exploitation of
women.
I personally think the photo
is disgusting-that girl looks
horrible in a bikini.
Who knows about these things
dept.: Now that Gerald Ford
has nominated a male to the
Supreme Court post vacated
by Justice Douglas, he might
be surprised on his return
from China. His wife, Betty,
that self-proclaimed expon-
ent of bedroom diplomacy,
just might move him to the
couch in the Oval Office for
the rest of his term of office.
Who won? Father Fandal,
of course. He offered beer to
the UD students.

Meanwhile back at the ranch:
The new UD tennis facility
has been completed and a
great deal of thanks is due to
all those who made it
possible. This reporter had
the pleasure of playing on the
new courts during the open-
ing ceremonies and I must
say they are nice, although
they will get wet when it
rains. Now what we need is a
similar fund drive for a few
hundred thousand books in
our library.
And, since it has been
completely ignored up to now
by this tabloid, let it be
mentioned that the theology
department conducted a very
fine series of lectures recent-
ly. (And SG-LFA could take a
few lessons from them on how
to throw an appropriate
post-lecture reception.)
“Sage of Salzburg” refused to
be angered with these ac-
cusations. Instead, he let the
absurdity of them fall from
their own weight.
Dr. Wilhelmsen’s argument
went like this: if in God there
are infinite essences and
these essences are not
identically God, and yet not
created, then there is some-
thing which is uncreated and
yet not the creator. As a
Christian it seems very
difficult for Dr. Seifert to hold
that there is anything besides
the creator and the created.
married women, and lastly,
single men. Glad to know I’m
so unhappy—I could have
gone through my bachelor-
hood in blissful ignorance of
that fact. Care must be taken
lest our eudaemonistic editor
read this, however; else
proposals on this campus
could reach epidemic propor-
tions.
Dear Editor:
Was that what Dr. Cowan
really wrote in his piece in
your Nov. 20th issue? The
shredding of an issue of a
west Texas campus news-
paper by an “irate admini-
strator” was “perhaps justi-
fied in the light of the
intended purpose.” Whose
purpose? What could possibly
“justify” such an incredibly
outrageous act?
This was a newspaper that
this creature “shredded” -
Dear Editor:
We, the undersigned, here-
by declare that the University
policies on dormitory living
don’t bother us all that much:
Scott A. Hajost, Dan
Utrecht, Joseph Duggan,
Eric Wedig, Mike Udrow,
David Baum, Steve Schulze,
R. B. Bauman, Joe G. N.
Garcia.
The philosophical discus-
sion was very high-level and
the whole could not be
grasped by most of the
audience. Students who had
taken at least a basic
metaphysics class could
make some sort of judgment.
He developed this by
claiming that “In being, then,
essence and existence are
inseparably ‘one.’ ” And, of
course, the “essence” of God
was spoken about. “God’s
essence is as infinite as His
‘esse; ’ His being does not only
consist of ‘existence,’ but is
infinite essence as well.” Dr.
Seifert concluded after about
18 minutes and took a seat
amid loud clapping.
It was now Dr. Wilhelm-
sen’s turn at the question of
the priority. Amid tremen-
dous applause, he took the
podium, placed his gold
watch to keep track of time,
and launched his attack.
The moment everyone had
been waiting for had arrived.
Within five minutes, Dr.
Wilhelmsen dealt with Dr.
Seifert’s arguments for the
identity and priority of
essence and existence. He
then proceeded, in a brilliant
yet entertaining manner, to
the defense of the late
Professor Phelan, Etienne
Gibson, and himself. For Dr.
Seifert, in his recent mono-
gram “Essence and Exist-
ence,” had accused them of
approaching pantheism.
Dr. Wilhelmsen, with re-
ferences to Seifert as the
beer). The students, faculty,
and visitors who attended
were given a masterful and
brilliant show.
First, Father Fandal ad-
dressed the debaters and
audience with a statement of
procedure and purpose. The
disputation between Dr. Sei-
fert and Dr. Wilhelmsen was
to clarify philosophical pos-
tions. Dr. Frederick Wil-
helmsen, UD professor of
Philosophy and Politics, de-
fended the priority of exist-
ence over essence. Dr. Joseph
Seifert, associate professor of
Philosophy, argued for the
primary of essence over
existence.
Contestants and audience
knew before entering the
room that nothing would be
settled and little agreed upon,
but in a spirit of charity, the
doctors went at it.
A kitchen timer was set to
allow each contestant 20 ’
minutes for their initial
statement of position. Dr.
Seifert was the first to talk.
He began by attacking the
arguments supporting the
primacy of existence over
essence. After attempting
that, he proceeded to support
the argument that essence is
in some way prior to
existence.

reported in the Dallas Times
Herald that the happiest
group of people in this
