THAT 18<WHAT DENTON COUNTY
HANDY LAND DID IN FRUIT AND
TRUCK.
RO. Elllchman, living thra:
miles aoutheest of lhe city,
Saturday that off four acrefc of or-
chard in ^bearing thia year he had
aold 1607 worth of fruit, selling it
at whole ale prices to local dealers
ind peddling none of it at retail. He
hag twelve acres in orchard altoge-
ther with eight acres not yet tn
bearing, and says he expects to keep
about four acres bearing all the time,
replanting from time to time »s the
old treeg fall. In addition to the
fruit Mr. Elllchman got more than
Sj00 worth of truck off the twelxe
acres in orchard i _____ ________
the tree-rows, in spite of the ex-
treme dryness of the summer. Thro-:
quarters of an acre in«weet potatoes,
which he thought would make noth*-
ing on account of the drouth*, made
him ninety bushed of fine “pumpkin
yams," which are readily salable to
local grocer * at 11.25 a busnel.
“The trouble with many Denton
county fruit growers,’’ said Mr. El -
lichman, “is that they do not replace
their old treea-after they have passed
their prime. To get tne best results
I expect te replant at least part of
my orchard every year and intend to
keep about four acres only of bearing
tree .”
Mr. Elllchman made over 1900 oft
the twelve acres th*e pist season or
better than $75 an acre, while bis
four acres brought an income of more
tnan $175 an acre, including the $25
an acre worth of truck crops.
