so increase physical resistance to
periodic discomfort

Summary of Work in 1940
The following summary was taken
from the annual report made to the
County Commissoner’s Court, and
the Texas Extension by the County
Agent.
During 1940 the agent spent 104
working days in the field and 88
days in the office or in meetings
outside the county. In the year 470
different farm homes were visited in
some way, either a farm visit or for
some demonstration. To assist in
giving out information 699 individ-
ual letters, and 63 different circu-
lar letters were mailed to farmers
in the county. The agent writes an
agricultural column in each of the
four weekly newspapers and sent
these four papers 190 newstories of
agricultural interest. To the 3,200
office callens, over 3,900 bulletins were
given. In four events, extension ex-
hibits were shown. The farm people
were reachd by radio in five broad-
casts.
In the work of soil conservation
activities, 64 days were devoted to
demonstrations and meetings, visits
were made to 202 farms, 27 meetings
held, 2,540 acres teraced on 124
farms. To assist in insect control 74
farm visits were made in 11 days of
work. The AAA was assisted in 24
days of work by holding 35 meet-
ings. The Soil Conservation service
and the extension agent cooperated
in 6 meetings. Cooperative marketing
efforts required 12 days, 9 meetings,
and 8 farm visits. Poultry work had
18 days, 15 demonstrations, and 21
meetings, and 35 farm visits. Dairy
Cattle was given attention in 18
days of work, 44 farm visits, and 10
meetings. Boys clubs in beef cattle
and hogs required 11, and 9 days,
respectively along with many meet-
ings. Horticultural work required 28
days of time in making 66 farm vi-
sits, and holding 40 meetings and
demonst rations.
Community leaders were assisted
in 19 days of community activity,
while these leaders helped the agent
by attending 67 meetings.

Outlook Good for Hogs
The immediate outlook is favora-
ble for an expansion in hogs for
this spring and all next year.
The Texas pig crop in the fall of
1940 was 25 percent below the 1939
pig crop. The decline in the whole
United States began in the spring
of 1940, continued to fall during the
fall, in fact, 14 percent less pigs are
expected for the psring crop of 1941.
This would indicate that the far-
mer who could raise more pigs next
year will likely find a ready market
for them.

Farm Income Up
The prices for dairy and poultry
lose the last few months of last
year, while hogs decreased sightly,
and calves remained about the same.
As a whole, farm prices were up
slightly fom last year. Texas farm
crops had a value of more than
S367,000.000, or an increase of about
If- percent over 1939.
Most crops produced more last
year than 1939. Prices for some
crops were lower, but the larger pro-
duction made the total income some-
what higher. Cotton still accounted
for nearly one half of the farm val-
ue of crops. Truck crops brought
about 15 percent more in the state
as a whole than the previous year.
