A siren wails. A fire truck dashes to the scene of a roaring blaze, and fire
fighters battle to save lives and property..This is the image of the fire de-
partment.
But there is another side to the department's activities. Routine administra-
tive chores such as keeping records and ordering equipment must be attended to
in order to assure the trucks being ready to rol I.
Fire Chief C.A. Chriswell oversees the administrative tasks. His duties are
listed as "complete responsibility for planning, directing, and coordinating
the activities of the personnel and equipment of the fire department in con-
nection with fire prevention and extinguishment and in the saving of lives
and property.
Next in the chain of command is First Assistant Chief Chester A. "Pete" Shelton,
who does supervisory work in directing city wide fire fighting service, assists
the fire chief in directing all municipal fire fighting activities and responds
to all major fires, at which time he assumes command of fire fighting.
The clerical chores of the department are handled by Mrs. Thelma Simpson, secre-
tary to the Chief, and Mrs. Billie Simpson, secretary to the Fire Marshals. A
sampling of their duties include routine correspondence, purchase orders, local
and state reports, posting fire runs, etc.
