' DISTRICT TENNIS
TOURNAMENT
On Monday, May 4, the Electra
Junior High tennis team participa-
ted in the district tennis tourna-
ment in Bowie. The girls singles
came away withfirst and second
place. Celine Helzlsouer winning
first, and Jo Turner coining in
second place.
In the boys singles division,
Bradley Schlegel* came in second
and Donny Chick came in third
place.
Thejgirls doubles turned out like
; . the singles division, with both of
the Electra teams playing in the
finals for first place. Ra Nae
Lozipone and Cindy Carpenter
took first place with Stacy Smith
and Darcy Stone receiving second
place.
The boys doubles played excep-
tionally well also. Winning first
place was Eddie Rodgers and
Royce Reynolds. The team of
Mark Rowe and Jeff Goodwin
played for third place. Electra won
four of the six possible places.*
Both the girls and boys won the
district tennis team trophy. These
trophies were not easily won. Not
only was the competition tough,
but the rainy weather made
playing conditions rough. We are
their last Study meeting May 7, in ' all proud of the Electra Junior
the home of Deena Hodges.
President Wilda Palmer opened,
the meeting. Skeet Walton led the
opening prayer.
After the business session the
last 2 chapters of the book of-
Ezekiel was taught by .Wilma .
McDonald.
Dismissal with prayer was- by
Eunice Owens. Refreshments
were then served to those already -
named and: Florence Nunnally,
Lotty Patty, Lois Rodgers and
Mozelle Gordon.

The play “The Matchmaker”
which is the original play that the
. broadway show ‘‘Hello Dolly”
came from was presented by Arts
Magnet high school in Dallas April
28-May 3.
Bret Gilbert had the leading part
of Horace.
The director is Paul Baker who is
associated with the Dallas Theatre
Center.
Bret, a junior, is the son of
Carolyn Milford Gilbert of Dallas
and Troy Gilbert of Electra and
grandson of Mr. and Mrs. R.A.
Gilbert of Electra and Mr. and
Mrs. R.C. Milford Jr. of Houston.

Star Gas Co.-, permission'to. move
existing gas meters from the home
to the alleyways. Lone Star Gas
Manager Bill Fletcher said that
this would affect about 20 Electra
homeowners and that lines would
not be moved until leaks develop-
ed. At that time Lone Star would
move the meter to the alley and
replace or sufficiently repair the
line to the homeowner at the
expense of the company. Follow-
ing that, the service line would be
the responsibility of the .home-
owner.
-Passed the second reading of
an electrical ordinance increasing
the rates for All-Electric Commer-
cial ’users. The ordinance affects
only the rates currently charged to
Electra Memorial Hospital, Dick-
ey, McGann & Rowe Insurance,
The Chicken Kitchen and Electra
State Bank & Trust Co.

On Thursday, May 7, Mr.
Willman’s speech class put on a
play during activity period. The
name of the play was “Ghost for
Rent.” The characters were:

ings, Becky Boudling and Aunt
Margret,’Hastings Becky Alexan-
* der as Jane Fox, Julie Scales as
• Bud Richards, Tina Vickers as the
ghost, Tamie Smith as good ghost
and Valinda Lemon as Aggie Fox.
The students really enjoyed the

: Tuesday night proclaimed May as
. ’“Clean Up, Paint Up and Fix Up”
month encouraging local residents
in the local clean up campaign by
offering free trash pickups for
excess garbage, tree clippings and
other juiik items. The campaign
will actually cover part of two
months including the rest of May
and through the 12th of June. City
.-Manager John Boland asked that
' .local residents who wish to take
advantage of the free pick-up
