This started out in my mind to be
a relatively insignificant, but
sincere, tribute to a very remark-
able man. The fact of the matter
is, however, that this man’s life
and work is the most fitting tribute
and the lives that he has brought
into this world the most enduring
monument.
Obviously the man of whom I
speak is Dr. William H. Ogden.
The facts are simple. He as born in
Coal Hill, Arkansas, on March 10,
1882. He was licensed to practice
medicine in Indian Territory (now
Oklahoma) in 1906. He was
graduated from the University of

Louisville Medical School. He
moved to West Texas, near Pecos,
where he first heard of Electra
from friends who dealt in oil rigs.
Hearing of the need of doctors in
the oil boom town he boarded a *
Fort Worth and Denver train and
stepped off that railroad car on
November 11, 1911. He was met
by a sandstorm and a typhoid
epidemic.
Dr. Ogden drove a horse and
buggy to see his patients. Once he
even performed an appendectomy
on a kitchen table. He continued to .
practice his chosen profession foff^
more than seventy years, includ-
ing a stint with the 36th Division
Medical Detachment in World
War I in France.
The pioneer doctors were impor-
tant factors in the settlement of
the western portions of this nation..
They helped the people of the
frontier overcome the ailments of
civilization hundreds of miles from^w
the medicine of that civilization.,
Afficionados of the old Gunsmoke
program on television would pro-
bably picture in their minds Doc
Adams, a feisty, outspoken man
on the outside, but one who
showed his devotion to his town by
his actions. So Dr. Ogden has
shown his devotion to the people
of this community.
1 had the opportunity of visiting 41
Dr. Ogden and his charming wife,
Inga, last Monday evening. He
had had a tiring day, having gone
out to their ranch with their son,
Henry, but was still up and around
and able to chuckle in a very
delightful manner. The spirit that
carried this man through the
epidemics of the early years of our
history is still there. He lives not in|^
the past but in the world of today,
with the resolve and the strength
that built this community. The
men and women who pioneered
this land were filled with such
resolve, such strength. This man
is a living example of the pioneer
American.
Happy Birthday Dr. William H._
Ogden.
