Meeting Set
Parents of graduating Elect-
ra Junior High 8th grade
students are encouraged to
attend an important meeting
Tuesday, May 6th at 7 p.m. in
the School’s library, according
to Principal Billy Don Clark.
Keith Sales, Electra High
School Principal, will be on
hand to discuss optional pro-
grams students may begin
their first year in High School.
Electra lost one of its true
pioneers this past week and we
lost a good friend in W.C. (Curt)
Stewart. We will miss him, but
he was one of those fellows that
won’t be forgotten.
He studied journalism at the
University Oklahoma and came
to Electra in 1921 to publish the
Electra Star with partner Carl
Mader. He acquired sole owner-
ship in 1934.
Mr. Stewart had a long news-
paper career (37 years) in Electra
and even dabbled in the radio
business. His career covered
many changes in the newspaper
and printing industry and he was
one of those few who could sit at
the Ennertype and mold a story
or set it by hand from the type
drawer.
We first met Mr. Stewart in
1976 the day this writer came
home to Electra. He was among
the first visitors to welcome us to
Electra, a visit that was followed
by many such enjoyable occa-
sions.
He offered advise when asked
for (which was often from a
"wet-behind the ears reporter”),
but mostly we talked about
Electra. Electrans and of course,
his passion of camping and
fishing. His greatest love was his
wife who passed away in 1975
and he was especially proud of
“Son”, Lt. Col. (retired) Billy
Stewart.
He touched many lives in this
community during 37 years of
newspapering and those lives
were enriched because of it.
The smell and burns from hot
lead, ink from fingertip to elbow,
sweat dripping on a galley of
freshly-set type, the clang of a
sheet-fed press and a Thursday
morning backache are experien-
ces this reporter missed, but
ones thal were shared by Curt
through manv visits I will always
be grateful I knew him.
