Alarcon established ten fami-

settlement the Villa de Bexar.
The little village and mission
were to grow slowly into the
center of Spanish activity in
Texas. The town of San Antonio
was to become a large and
prosperious city, the largest in
Texas for many years. The
Mission San Antonio de Valero
was to become much better
known as the Alamo,

It was 268 years ago today, on
May 1,1718, that one of the more
important events in Texas history
took place. The Spanish had
established missions in East
Texas, but they were having
serious problems. The Indians
near the missions were not too
receptive to the missionary zeal
of the Spaniards. Supplies for the
priests and soldiers left in East
Texas had to be brought from the
Rio Grande settlements many
hundreds of miles away over
some very rough country.
Spanish authorities, including
church officials, were anxious to
establish a halfway station be-
tween East Texas and the Rio
Grande. Don Martin de Alarcon
was chosen to lead the expedition
with Father Olivares in charge of
the religious responsibilities of
the expedition.
Father Olivares and Alarcon
apparently did not get along too
well, which was not too unexpec-
ted since the military and civil
luthorities had different goals
han the religious leaders. Father
Jlivares went ahead of the main

Uver where the plan had been to

A new addition this year will be
the popular (and somewhat du-
bious) designation of “Goat King
and Queen”. Each of the compe-
titing teams will designate can-
didates for “King and Queen” of
the 1986 Goat BBQ Cookoff. A
voting booth will be erected near
the gate to allow spectators to
cast their ballots. The King and
Queen will be crowned at the
conclusion of cooking competi-
tion and during the awards
ceremony.

Homeowners who don’t curren-

Another new law helps tax
collectors enforce property tax
liens on mobile homes. It allows
tax collectors to file a tax lien
notice with the Texas Depart-
ment of Labor and Standards,
which is the agency that records
and issues mobile home titles.
The lien notice remains in effect
until the taxes are paid in full.
“The lien notice warns future
purchasers that there are unpaid
property taxes on the mobile
home, ’ ’ Patterson explained.
“This empowers the tax collector
