Mark your calendars for the
Annual Wichita County Wheat
Tour for Friday, May 16. The
Wichita County Field Crops
Committee set the date at their
recent meeting.
Wheat producers will be able
to see the latest work on

rates.
The tour will begin with

At a recent crops committee
meeting, the uniform planting
date for cotton in Wichita County
was set. The date for cotton
planting is Monday, May 19,

Although a thorough inspection
is best done by a professional, a
home owner can make a quick
check for termite infestations. If
termites or damage is found,
contact a local pest control
company. This is one insect pest
that should not be handled by a
“do-it-yourselfer”. Commercial
pest control companies have thfe
necessary equipment and exper-
ience to effectively rid a home of
termites.
One word of caution. Be sure
and ask for some work references
if a new pest control company is
being used. They will certainly
have some good ones. But if
they do not supply some names

already had some termites brou-
ght into the office and have heard
reports of swarming occurring.
Winged termites outdoors are a
natural occurrence, so usually
there is no problem. But if they
are found indoors, usually on a
window sill, chances are good
that an infestation has establish-
ed in your home.
Termites can cause extensive
damage to wooden parts of your
home, so take some precautions.
Quite often termites and certain
ants swarm at the same time and
it’s important to be able to tell
the difference between those two
insects. Carpenter ants swarm in
the springtime and can cause
some structural damage to wood.
However, termites are much
more destructive and require
different control measures.
Termites have a broad waist-

the dreaded boll weevil.
With winter being warmer
than usual, these same adults
survived the winter and will be
emerging in real numbers the
last week of May and first week
of June.
Planting cotton after May 19
will insure producers of less
problems with the boll weevil.
The farmers of Wichita County
urge all cotton producers to
follow this year’s planting date
and take the first step in
stamping out the boll weevil.
The Wichita County Field
Crops Committee is headed by
Larry McAlister of Electra. Other
committee members include:

ants have elbowed antennae.
Termites may be attracted to
your house by dead tree limbs,
stumps, old lumber and other
sources of termite food. These
should be removed.
