“If the desk stand is held above the lips and talked up to, the little granules
“pack" against the diphram and the voice will sound muffled and thick to the listener.
When speech is directed to the mouthpiece at an angle, or from a distance of
from six inches to a foot away, the person at the other end of the line cannot hear
your voice distinctly.
Careful tests demonstrate that tilt- transmitter will render the most efficient
service when the telephone rests on a level surface and is stationary like a wall tele-
phone.
This part of the telephone is designed to gather the sound waves of the voice,
and will do so efficiently when the lips of the person speaking are about half an inch
from, and directly in front of it.
That part of the telephone into which you talk through the mouthpiece is the
transmitter. The wall just hack of the mouthpiece is the diaphram, to the rear of which
is a small drum partly filled with carbon crushed to about the size of granulated sugar.
Science and experience have combined to determine the shape and size and
material to be used in the proper construction of the most efficient mouthpiece.

The functions of the granular carbon are to take sound vibrations from the
diphram and send them out over the wires in varying impulses.
The best results will be obtained by speaking directly into, and close up to, the
moutlipiece in a flear-not-too loud, tone of voice.
