THE TEXAS ALMAI
lions of acres of fertile but unplowed land,
the population of the State is increasing
at the rate of about 100,000 annually ac-
cording to the estimates of the United
States Bureau of the Census. During the
last seven or eight years, the figures on
residence, commercial and industrial
structure building, highway construction,
bank debits and deposits, number of serv-
ice connections of utilities and value and
volume of manufacturing and distribution
have increased more rapidly than at any
previous period in the history of the
State.
WEALTH OF TEXAS AND NATIONAL WEALTH.
Statistics on national wealth are available in
census reports from 1850 to 1922 for years given
below. Estimates for 1850, 1860 and 1870 were
confined to taxable real property and personal pri-
vate property of individuals, firms and corpora-
tions. Those for later dates include also tax ex-
empt property, such as public domain and property
of religious and educational institutions. The esti-
mates for 1850 and 1860 included the value of slaves
in Southern States. Statistics for the United
States and for the State of Texas follow:
