increase has been beyond what we ex-
pected. We have the best ventilated,

Already the willing cooperation of the
citizenship in the Federation’s general
clean-up, to precede the April clean-up
before the meeting of the District Fed-
eration, is being evidenced. Work has
begun on many streets on vacant lots,
for the prettiest of which, by the way,
the Federation is offering a prize this
summer. Work has also been done on
sagging and unkempt fences, and a num-
ber have already been rebuilt or mend-
ed. Some of them would have been any-
way, probably, as spring is the general
cleaning up and, mending month, but
it is felt that there is a spirit of co-
operation with the clean-up and the
Federation improvement work this year
that has never been so strong before.
The plan is now that with the co-
operation of the city government and
the Chamber of Commerce, both of
which are already assured, the trash
resulting from the clean-up week in
April will be hauled off to no expense
to the citizens. The Federation is offer-
ing a prize also for the biggest trash
pile. •
A Comparison Between
A LAWN MOWER
and an Axe.
When a man buys an axe he gets
one that weighs 4 or 5 pounds. If
he bought one that weighed 8 or 10'
pounds, he would become exhausted
in a short while—so the light axe is
far the better in the end.
When you buy a lawnmower, the
same principle applies. The old-style
cast mower is TOO HEAVY, and
soon you will notice the dead
weight. In a short while you are tir-
ed out and perhaps have done a
very poor job.
But the “ALL STEEL” mower is
made of STEEL, instead of heavy
cast iron. It ought to run much
lighter—and it does.
Your hot and hard job is turned
into real pleasure, and if anyone
doubts this, we offer to send the
ALL STEEL MOWER out on trial.
LIGHT RUNNING is only one of
the many fine points of our new
mower. Other things are:
Durability—Easy Adjustment.
Better Service—Strength.
Great Saving in Expense.
Our Straight Guarantee.

TRIANGLE PROGRAM
(
Perhaps the most tiresome, and from
the point of view of the layman in the
audience, the most unnecessary pro-
cess, is the “tunlng-\p" of a symphony
orchestra before a concert. Strains of
tuning and impromptu scales and ar-
peggios emanating from many instru-
ments at once float from behind' the
stage, accompanied in the audience by
the rustling of programs and other vis-
ible signs of impatience.
Only the musician realizes how nec-
essary a preparation this is. The tuning
of a symphony orchestra, of course, re-
quires a standard, and although the
means of procuring the correct pitch,
the Philharmonic Society of New York,
has found it most expedient to »tse a
standard tuning fork. Formerly the “A”
pitch was given by the oboe—an instru-
ment similar to the clarinet but a little
shorter and played through a double
reed instead of a clarinet mouthpiece.
But the oboe is more or less influenced
by the weather, although it varies less
than any other instrument.
All the instruments of the Philharmo-
nic Orchestra take their pitch from a
fork which is tuned to what is known
at the “standard international ‘ A-435
pitch," that is, the A above middle C,
which vibrates 435 times per Second.
This is lower than the former “concert
pitch” which sacrificed everything to
brilliancy. “A-435” has been found best,
on the whole, for singers and players
alike.
