Fredericksburg
Slates Festival
An evening loaded with
singing, dancing and conti-
nuous entertainment, is plan-
ned for Saturday, when the
Fredericksburg Chamber of
Commerce hosts its 18th An-
nual Night, in Old Fredericks-
burg celebration.
Slated to begin at, 5:30
p.m., the “NIOF” festival will
take place at, the Gillespie
County Fair Grounds, located
from 7:4$ tjll 8:30, again with
Pehl’s Oldtime Band as the
accompanist, The Cloverleaf
Orchestra from New Braunfels
will play for the German dance
from9 till 1:30 in the exhibition
hall.
on Texas Highway 16, two
miles southwest, of ’Frede-
ricksburg. The grounds will
open at,5 p.m.
For the country-western
music fans, the Bill Smallwood
Band will start, things off on
sound stage 1 at, 5:30. Then,
the FriUtpwn Squares will
perform a square dance exhi-
bition from 8-8:45. The Jim Ed
Brown Show featuring The
Gems will provide the major
country-western music enter-
tainment, from 9-1:30 on the
dance slab adjacent, tp sound
stage 1.
The exhibition hall will
house the German festivities
during the course of the
evening starting at, 5:30 with
Pehl’s Oldtjme Band. A com-
plete program of dancing,
singer and a sing-a long will
be highlighted by the perfor-
mances by the Arion Maen-
nerchor (men's choir), the
Hermann Sons Mixed Choir
and the Kinderchor (children's
choir) from 5:30 till 7:45 with
Pehl’s Oldtime Band providing
the music.
A waltz contest, is scheduled
Throughout, the evening,
sound stage 3 will feature the
Poverty Playboys (bluegrass
music), the Fritztpwn Knutych
Band (German accordion mu-
sic) and Texas Blue, a division
of the Band of the West. from
Lackland AFB (Country-rock
music).
If one has a competitive
nature, a horseshoe pitching
contest,and a washer pitching
contest^ are scheduled. The
chickens are back again this
year tp compete in a flying
contest, and a German cos
tpme contest will seek those
who come dressed in the most,
authentic of Old World garb.
Children who accompany their
Earents tp this gala event, can
e occupied in the penny mine
set, up just, for them on the
grounds.
Food and drink will abound
with an assortment, including:
pork sandwiches, sausages.
German bologna sandwiches,
homemade ice cream, German
potatp salad, chocolatp chip
cookies, Mexican food, a sau-
sage plate comstrudel, and
shish kebabs.
Admission charges are $4
for adults; SI for children 6-12,
and children under 6 are
admitted free.

The almanac says that, it, is
two weeks before Dog Days
begins. With the hot weather
we’ve been having the last,few
weeks, one wonder if those
days are not,upon us already.
One consolation we have is
about, five months from now,
we will have a change, hope-
fully.
Recent, visitors of Lydia
Grenwelge and May Lou have
been: Mr. and Mrs. Henry
Lang and Mr. and Mrs. John
Goeke of Temple. Also Mrs.
Ella Shiller of Rogers. Mrs.
Shiller and Mrs. Goeke are
sisters of Lydia and Mr. Lang
is a brother.
Opal Schneider returned
home from San Antpnio last,
week after arm surgery.
Mrs. Anges Leifestp who
now resides in Austin, spent,a
couple of days last, week with
daughter, Emily Birk.
Geraldine Lang was in Abi-
lene Tuesday and Wednesday
of last, week tp be with *1er
father who had major surgery.
Then on Friday she went, back
again and returned Saturday
with Henry, Jan and David
who had gone tp Ballinger for
a reunion.
The Richard Hugstpns were
in from Midland for a couple of
days last, week Murdering
those grass burrs around the
house.
Gertrude Grote and Myrtle
Wilenberg accompanied Lois
Mae Dalchau tp Abilene Tues-
day of last,week when she tpok
her grandchildren Jana and
Dana home
St, Chrysostpm said, "As a
moth grows a garment, so doth
envy consume a man.’
When St, John Women of
the church met. last, week,
T’astpr Flzcy led the Bible
Study, Our Relationship with
Christ, Devotion was given by
Mrs. C.A. Lenm and a medi-
tation for the offering by
Mamie Keese. Hostess, Eve-
lyn Sagebiel served bowls of
assorted jello and cookies.

Diabetic Recipes
AUSTIN-Because of the
growing number of diabetics
in Texas, the Texas Depart-
ment of Agriculture has
published a cookbook
meeting the special needs of
this group. Agriculture
Commissioner Reagan V.
Brown has announced.
It is estimated that 700,000
1 exans are diabetic and that
the incidence of diabetes
increases at the rate of six
percent per year. Brown said.
Diet is very important in the
basic treatment of diabetes.
The cookbook contains
more than 25 new recipesand
sections on nutritional
labeling, eating out. brown
bagging, and seasoning with
herbs and spices.
