heavy rainfall and flooding in
late April. The dam at Nabors Lake
broke and the torrential downpours
dumped 17.5 inches of rain on De
Leon one night and the following
morning. Roads and bridges were
washed out, land and buildings
flooded, and livestock swept away.
Proctor Lake was at its highest level
The De Leon Hospital board
purchased the Gorman Clinic and
began providing rural health care to
that area.

with some alarm that not a head of
stock was to be seen.

“I hope Joe ain’t hauled my calf off
to the auction barn.”
He soon located Joe over at the
catch pen. All Joe's herd was
incarcerated therein and Joe and
some neighbors were administering
shots, notching ears, etc.

Norman inquired with great
interest.
“Not really,” Joe responded, “but
he could be in there with mine. See if
you can locate him.”
Norman perched atop the chute
and sure enough, he soon spotted his
wandering bull.
“There he is!” Norman pointed
out his property to Joe.
“Well, I swan, we shore didn’t
know we had him in there,” Joe said.
“I’m just glad I found him,”
Norman voiced his relief.
“He’s had his shots,” Joe said.
“I’ll pay you for them,” Norman
said.
“Won’t be necessary,” Joe said.
“We're neighbors.” Joe glanced
down at his shoes for the longest
time before he spoke again.
"We put my notch in his ear,” he
told Norman.
“No harm done," Norman said.

Now, Norman had a neighbor who
also dabbled in the beef bidness, and
their ranges were separated by a
barbed wire fence of ancient vintage
and questionable construction. But
Norman and Joe got along real well.
Getting along with one another is a
heap less work than rebuilding
