When the Alvin ISD Board of Trustees gather for their
Dec. 9 regular meeting, members will put the finishing
touches on a three-month endeavor that enabled admin-
istrators and citizens to develop attendance zone bound-
aries for the western portion of the district.
The meeting, which begins at 7 p.m., will give ISD

Claus outfit while placing a holiday banner along Gordon Street on Dec. 2. The signs were a
reminder to motorists and residents of the Christmas season that is upon them. Motorists driv-
ing along Gordon honked numerous times to distract Santa. (Staff photo by Albert Villegas)

Thanksgiving is over for an-
other year, but holiday cheer is
still on the minds of many area
residents. And there is still time
to give thanks by giving from
the heart, and doing for oth-
ers. Also there are activities for
adults and children to enjoy as
a way to celebrate the joy of the
holidays that last from Thanks-
giving to New Year’s Day

The School Boundary Advisory Committee was cre-
ated in preparation for the opening of Manvel Junior
High School for the 2015-16 school year and Shadow
Creek High School the following year.
During a workshop Dec. 2, trustees and school district
administrators discussed the effectiveness the SBAC
had throughout the process.
Interim Superintendent Tommy King said all of those
involved were very thorough when it came to fact-find-
ing ventures and listening to the public’s concerns. Since
most of the growth is on the west side of the school dis-
trict, it was important to develop a boundary plan where

Wells said anytime residents gave them contact infor-

For the first time since a
smoking survey was conducted
in October, the Alvin Parks and
Recreation Board discussed the
findings in an official capacity
during a regular meeting in the
Public Services Building on
Dec. 2.
Board members were trying
to gauge the opinions of citi-
zens who visit Alvin parks and
if they had strong opinions on
the matter of smokers or chew-
ers of tobacco.
Breakfast with Santa
will be held Saturday, Dec.
6 from 8:30-10:30 a.m. at
the Alvin Senior Center. This
annual event, sponsored by
the Alvin Library League,
provides the opportunity for
children to eat breakfast with
Santa and have their picture
taken with him. A children’s
book sale will be held during
that time. Cost is $5 per per-
son. Bring your camera.
Their discussion centered
on whether citizens were ini-
tiating any complaints and if
so to whom, or if it was just a
matter of citizens responding
to a smoking survey because
it was made available for two
months.
After speaking nearly half
an hour on the subject, board
members unanimously decided
they would not place smoking
in the parks as an agenda item
for future meetings.
“Unless we have complaints,
do we need to do anything,”
Chairman Dwight Rhodes said

The Alvin City Council unanimously amended an ordinance to
its building code during a regular meeting, Dec. 3.
The purpose of the ordinance amendment was to add parking
space requirements for museums that are currently effected, as
well as any that are constructed in the future.
Roy Sosa, plan examiner for the city's Permits and Inspection
Department, said the current code of ordinance does not have a
required parking space category for museums.
He said staff first noticed the absence of a museum category dur-
ing a plan review for the Karpeles Manuscript Museum, located at
800 West Sidnor.
“The current ordinance doesn't address museums, only sections
of commercial buildings, Sosa said. “We are proposing a parking
ratio of 10 spaces plus 1 space for every 400 square feet of floor
