Despite being closed for MLK Day,
the city of Alvin at 9 a.m. began to warn
residents and businesses of the brutally
cold weather that was forecast to move
late that night and into the next day.
A graphic from the NWS on the
city’s Facebook page explained that
an Arctic cold front packed with north
winds would be moving into Southeast
Texas. It would eventually bring a win-

came through the Houston area, placing tempera-
tures into the low 20s at times.

An Alvin resident is recovering after he was
shot by a co-worker at a Dickinson auto dealer-
ship Jan. 12, according to the Dickinson Police
Department.
Following
A winter freeze hit Southeast Tex-
as twice in back-to-back weeks this
month, forcing many residents, busi-
nesses, educational institutions and the
city to shift their schedules in advance
of the sub-freezing temperatures.
It was the second freeze Jan. 16 that
packed a wallop as a result of precipita-
tion that came with it. It came a day af-
ter Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which
had already resulted in the closure of
many institutions across the city as a
result of it being a national holiday.
The first freezing temperatures ac-
tually came Jan. 11 and lasted for a
couple of days, lowering the tempera-
tures below freezing in the Houston
area. However, the cold front didn’t
come with rain.
The second freeze in the overnight
hours of Jan. 16 into Jan. 17 were pre-
ceded with hours of light precipitation,
making driving conditions across the
city and Brazoria County hazardous.
According to the National Weather
Service at 9:08 p.m., Jan. 16, “south-
west” Alvin has received 0.14 inches of
rain and Alvin 0.04 inches of rain in a
24-hour period. It was just enough for
freezing temperatures to produce ice on
the roads.

a Dickinson PD investigation and
Auto Service Center in the 3000 block of the Gulf
Freeway, Sgt. Tim Cromie said Michael Pavlas,
38, of Alvin, was shot by Joshua Allen Lee, 29, of
Friendswood.
He said Pavlas was Lee’s supervisor, accord-
ing to a Dickinson PD report.
“The shooting appears to be a result of Lee be-
ing upset about the number of hours he was being
assigned at work; Pavlas was in his office when
he was shot,” Cromie said. “After the shooting,
Lee left in his 2011 Chevrolet Malibu. Dickinson
Police were able to broadcast a description of the
suspect’s vehicle.”
A League City police officer on the way to an-
other call spotted Lee’s vehicle traveling north-

an investigation at Gay Family
“The pursuit ended in Friendswood near his
home; Lee then ran from the vehicle and was
pursued on foot by officers from League City and
Webster police departments,” Cromie said. “Lee
had a Ruger .357 revolver on his person at the
time.”
Officers at the scene used a Taser to subdue
Lee and take him into custody. He did sustain a
small laceration on his chin as a result of being
tased and falling to the ground, Cromie said.
He adds that Lee did not have a license to car-
ry a handgun.

As a result of the winter blast that came through Alvin, a
“warming center” was opened inside a banquet hall on the prop-
erty of Knights Inn Motel in the late afternoon hours of Tuesday,
Jan. 16. It helped in having people come out of the cold that had
dipped into the low 20s overnight and into the morning the fol-
lowing day.
Jill Craddock Rea, who headed the effort, said she was able to
book the facility for those who didn’t have a warm place to stay.
There were roughly around 40 people who used the warming cen-
ter in one capacity or another, volunteers said.
