Austin, Texas, Oct. 22,1900.
Supt. J. W. Saxon,
Angleton, Texas.
Dear Sir:—I have your letter of the
17 h inst. and also the enclosed letter
of Mr. Woodward’s, relating to the j
condition of the school houses in Bra-1
zoria county. Just here I wish to add
further that I received from you some
weeks ago a letter addressed to Gover-
nor Sayer? ami the state board, through
me, asking for aid in behalf of the
Brazoria county schools. I did not
answer your first letter, but waited to
get an opportunity to present it to the
Ssate Board of Education. However,
as that bod}’ has not met for weeks,
and a? Governor Sayers is out of the
state, nothing has been don? about
w’hich I could write.
The deplorable condition of the
, school buildings, a? descrited by Mr.
Woodward am: yourself, is assuredly a
sad one. It does seem that out of the
funds which yearly come into the
state treasury from the p-o.?perous
portions of the state, some fur.ds might
oe appropriated to the re-building of
the wrecked echcol houses in the
storm-swept parts of the state. How-
ever, the laws as they stand al present,
give no such authority to the Governor,
to myself, or to any state or county
official. The delay, it is true, is hard
to be borne, but I do not bel eve any
relief can be given until the legisla-
ture meets on the first of next January.
At that time I hope to see immediate
steps taken locking to the rehabili-
tation of the school houses destroyed
by the September storms. It may be
a: present some help may be obtained
from the proper con mittees iu Hous-
ton or Galveston, th .uigh this even la
doubtful.
Assuring you an’ your people of
my sincere sympathy in your mis-
fortune, and my intention to do all I
can for your schools in the future, I
btg to remain, Yours very truly,
J. S. Kendall,
State Supt.

It was partially unroofed and other-

session. Angleton finished in January,
