Ever since our electricity was
cut off last year on account of me
forgetting to mail in the pay-
ment the Missus has been sort
of leery about giving me letters
to mail
At first she’d ask If I mailed
them, then double-cheek my eoat
pocket at night She stopped
that and I figured she was con-
vinced I’d learned my lesson.
Then yesterday, I got a post-
card at the office in a familiar
handwriting. I turned it over and
by golly it was from the Missus
herselfl It read: “Thanks, Joo, -
for mailing my letters.” Well! •

needed some checking-up and
slipped that poetcard in the last
batch of letters.
From where I sit, an occasional
eheck-up is a good thing. Check-
ups on just how tolerant we are
of other people’s preferences and
tastes, for example. I like a glass
of beer with supper, you may
prefer cider—but if I ever try to
switch you to my choice, simply
“address” me with a reminder of
your rights.

CLARK W. THOMPSON

Dear Neighbors:
The controversy between Sec-
retary of Agriculture Benson
and the Soil Conservation peo-
ple has died down, at least on
the surface. It could not well do
otherwise. The Secretary had
the authority to reorganize the
Soil Conservation Service as he
did. In his judgment it was a
wise procedure. In the judgment
of a great many other purely
volunteer workers in the pro-
gram it was not wise. Time will
tell who is right.
In the meantime I wish to
emphasize to these good friends
of mine with whom I have work-
ed for years in Soil Conserva-
tion that we .have this situation
to live with. Even though we do
not agree, the best thing we can
do is to pitch in and try to
make it work. If it is not a good
plan the Secretary wiU find out
about it soon enough, We will
then be in a much better posi-
tion to change it than if he
could say, “I would have work-
ed had you not dragged your
feet and hindered any possible
hopes of success.”
In the past few days press re-
ports indicate that the Senate
intends to take prompt action to
take prompt action to approve
the cotton bill which the House

with the agent, Mr. Reese pre-
sent.
