I Cong. Thompson’s
Weekly Newsletter
WASHINGTON, May 15.—
Cong. Clark W. Thompson
cast “one of the most crucial
votes of my career” today as
the conference report on legis-
lation restoring state owner-
ship of the tidelands came be-
fore the House.
The Senate was expected to
follow suit in passing the
measure, which then goes to
I the White House. Along with
♦ he entire Texas delegation,
Thompson voted to affirm the
claim of Texas and other
coastal states to their sub-
merged lands.
‘‘Now the ouestion is wheth-
er President Truman will sign
the bill," the congressman
pointed out. “If he doesn't
we will most emphatically de
everything in our nower to so
dire passage over his veto.”
> Thomtwm will fix' homo
this week-end to attend two
gatherings at opposite ends of
the Ninth District. Friday night
he is scheduled to address the
graduating ela.ss of the Indus-
trial Consolidated School at
Vanderbilt, "and Saturday he
will be at the district meeting
of the Rural Letter Carriers
Association in La Grange.
Meanwhile in Washington,,
action is still pending in the
Senate Agriculture Committee
on Thompson’s bill to correct
inequities in the distribution of
Extension Service funds, in-
cluding those for ,4-H activi-
ties. Approval of’the bill is
expected as soon as the com-
mittee completes its current
investigation of the Agricul-
ture Department. After the
favorable House action last
xveek, Thompson sees no diffi-
culty in securing passage by
Congress and approval by the
president.
