DGS Beginner's Workshop
WOW! On Saturday, 1 October, Sammie
Townsend Lee pulled off another smash success for
DGS. Because of Sammie's immeasurable skills, this
experiment of moving the beginner's seminar apart
from our fall symposium set a new high in
attendance. There are 208 brand-new genealogists
working like mad at this delicious insanity known as
genealogy. Over half of them have opted to register
for the DGS Regional Conference as well.
It was a full day for these beginners, but they were
absorbed every moment. Barbara Baylis kicked off
the day with a "how-to" and vital records lecture.
Mary Reid Warner introduced the census; and Leslie
Collier talked on types of books and records with
which we work. Sammie Lee capped off with a
session on our own DPL Genealogy Section and its
collection.
The overall success of the seminar could not have
been achieved without the expert help of Dorothy
Bruce with registration, Heather Williams with
special parking tickets and Adrienne Jamieson and
Helen Lu with snacks and arrangements. Seminar
attendees were so pleased with what they had learned
their donations to the coffee fund came within cents
of making us give them a rebate!
Things went so well that Sammie is exploring the
Library calendar to set a date for another Beginner's
Seminar sometime after the first of the year.Permanent Endowment
Fund
The Dallas Genealogical Society is accepting
donations in cash or securities to the Permanent
Endowment Fund. Donations will be invested in U.S.
Government obligations or U.S. Government-insured
obligations, and the investment proceeds will be used
to purchase books or equipment for the DPL
Genealogy Section. Donors will be gratified in
knowing that their donations will support genealogical
research indefinitely. You may mail donations to
Randall K. Wilhoit, DGS Treasurer, P.O. Box
12648, Dallas, TX 75225-0648 or deliver them
personally to Randy at any DGS function.Acadian Research

Oklahoma 1890 Census
Did you know that there is an 1890 Federal
Territorial Census extant for Oklahoma? Lita Watson
reports that this census (pre-statehood) did not burn
in the disastrous 1921 fire which destroyed most of
the 1890 Federal census.
Creating Family Calendars
Rebecca Swartz has found that carrying a family
calendar of her ancestors is very helpful. Becky uses
Calendar Creator Plus, a computer software program,
to create a calendar containing birth, marriage and
death dates of her ancestors. Also, many genealogical
computer software programs are equipped to create
similar calendars.DGS Newsletter
