A reminiscence of the state-
wide hunt for Leonard Potts,
who killed two Texas peace of-
ficers and was finally hunted
down and killed himself, occured
at the city hall Saturday after-
noon when policemen and city
officers shook hands with A. G.
Philips, of Woodland, Texas, who
killed Potts in a pistol duel.
A. G. Philips is postmaster at
Woodland, Texas, and is in Dal-
las for the purpose of reminding
the city commissioners of the
fact that they have not yet pass-
ed on the reward of $150 offered
for the killing or capture of Of-
ficer T. A Telford’s murderer
by the city.

A slick stranger victimized a
number of people in the country
around Detroit and Bagwell the
first of last week by a pretended
lottery scheme. He would sell
them chances in the drawing of
furniture and hardware. The
chances were sold very cheap
and were almost given away in
order to introduce the furniture
and hardware which he repre-
sented.
The way the strangerjmade his fitting recognition of his
money was to collect the frieght
in advance on the articles
drawn. One man drew a steel
range and his wife drew a
kitchen cabinet on chances that
didn’t cost them anything hardly.
After the farmer and his wife
had drawn the range and cabinet
the stranger told him that the
freight on them would be $4.98
and that it would have to be paid
in advance. The farmer didn’t
have but $4.90 and the stranger
told him that would do, that he
could pay the rest when the
goods were delivered and that
when they arrived he didn’t Lave
to take them if he didn’t like
them and that his money would
be refunded.
It is said that before the people
who were vitimized finally be-
came suspicious and tumbled to
the racket the stranger succeed-
ed in scooping in between $i50
and $350, and when they started
to investigate he had skipped.
