Calverton Council. No. 78 7 of the
Knights of Columbus, held a brilliant
exemplification of the first throe de-
grees of the order on Sunday, Oct. 11,
twenty-three candidates being receiv-
ed into the order. The council is
steadily advancing and win soon rank
as one of the largest tn the State. A
very large number ot knights from va-
rious parts of the State were in at-
tendance, filling the council hall to
its capacity.
In the morning at 8 o'clock the first
degree was conferred, after which
candidates and knights formed in line
and marched to St. Mary's Cathedral.

COLUMBUS DAY IN HOUSTON.

State holiday, it has been generally
observed in Houston in various ways,
but more especially by the Catholic so-
cieties. The banks were closed anti
the postotflee observed Sunday- hours,
the children nf the Catholic schools
were given a holiday and one of our
"Movies" displayed the landing of the
great Christopher in realistic man-
ner. The members of the Christo-
pher Columbus Society held their
fourth annual emventien and during
