The probable action of the '
county commissioners’ court on I
the resolution introduced by i
Commissioner C. D. Smith on
Thursday morning last, which 1
was, by common consent, defer-
red until next Saturday, has be- i
come a matter of much interest
ro»d general discussion among
citisen of the citv and county.
The resolution provides that tered awarding the contract to
no more stoney shall be paid out
on the contracts for the building
of the cardinal and intermediate
roads, setting forth as cause
therefor that in the first place
the contracts were not let in ac-
cordance with the Dallas county
road lawy. and that in some .in-
stances, or most of them, the
work that was done on the roads
was not done according to the
provisions of such contracts as
those entered into. It proposes
to reject absolutely the claim of
the contractors to the reserva-
tion of 15 per. cent of the con-
tract price, on the ground that
the work has not been done ac-
cording to contract.
Further than the purposes
stated, the resolution provides
for the establishment of a “main-
tenance of way” fund to keep
the roads of the county in repair;
that is, such of the roads as have
already been constructed. This
last provision, it will be remem-
bered, is in line with the recom-
mendations of the chief assistant
county engineer, made at the

roads in this section of the coun-

say of the Denton road from
Farmers Branch to Dallas:
“I think the Denton road from
Farmers Branch into Dalian is
one of the prettiest pieces of
road in the state. At the time
the grgvel was being placed on
that portion of the road many of
the formers living along the
highway did not hesitate to con-
demn the methods that were be-
ing used and freely predicted
that no serviceable road would
ever be built along such lines.
