I once Lue.v a man in Claiborne
county, East Tenn., whose life
was onu of self-dependence—did
his own business and delighted
in the same; times being good,
financially, the principal part of
his stay was in th country with
relativesand friends. He had a
good time—yes, nover, no never
to bp forgotten. It would be too
tedious to enter into fnll details
of these times; will give only a
text to its history, but in the
midstofall the joys, cpmforts and
pleasures of life, q great clash
came that made many hearts
bleed, and rivers of toars ru?*
The civil war came with a clash.
Everybody seenflod to be panic-
stricken; and why? From the
fact that it was at every family's
threshold. There has been a
great deal of talk and excitemept
over the Spanish-Amoriuitn war.
But it was not as a grain of sand
to the seashore, compared to oyr
civil war. The sufferings of our
soldiers in the present war, ac-
cording to reports, cannot be
compared to what men suffered
where this man was. But enough
on this point.
The person wo speak of xyas
blessed with life to return home
to his loved ones, and found bis
country looking as though a cy-
clone had swept over it, then sor-
row filled his heart. He thought
it best to re-improve his farm, so
as to induce some one to buy and
then sell; it all wonted well in the
enc|. by making- a sacrifice of
several hundred dollars. About
Sept. 15, 1870, he bid farewell
to hje old country and friends and
started on a three months’ trip
on the road, with, a two-horse
wagon, wife and two children.
On that trip, he experienced many
many changes-rstorm and sun-
shine, mud and dust, dangers,
seen and unseen. But it was
sink or swim, survive or perish.
