NEARLY 500 DOCTORS, DENTISTS TO
TAKE DRAFT PHYSICAL EXAMS SOON
AUSTIN, Sept. 11. — Nearly
500 Texas doctors and dentists
are scheduled to take draft
physical examinations late this
month, Brig. Gen. Paul L. Wake-
field state Selective Service di-
rector, said today.
This is the largest number of
doctors and dentists to be ex-
amined under the medical draft
law since January, 1951, when
145 were sent to examining sta-
tions.
"Under present plans, we ex-
pect to forward another 500
physicians and dentists to ex-
amining stations between Octo-
ber 1. and the end of the year,"
General Wakefield said.
"We recently have been auth-

orized to forward third priority
doctors and dentists for these
examinations by national head-
quarters," General Wakefield
continued. "The local boards
lately have been sending out
questionnaires to third priority
medical and dental personnel.
The state, Selective Service di-
rector said the law defined
third priority doctors and den-
tists as follows:
"Those who did not have ac-
tive service in the Army, the
Air Force, the Navy, the Ma-
rine Corps, the Coast Guard, or
the Public Health Service sub-
sequent to September 10, 1940."
Examinations will take place
in Abilene, Amarillo. Corpus
Christi, Dallas, Houston, San
Antonio; and Shiweport.
General Wakefield pointed
out that selection f<>r physical
and related examinations does
not necessarily mean s-eleetion
for armed forces service.
